Senné (Hungarian Ungszenna - until 1907 Szenna ) is a municipality in the far east of Slovakia , with 718 inhabitants (as of December 31, 2019). Administratively it belongs to the Okres Michalovce , which is part of the Košický kraj district . According to the 2001 census (751 inhabitants), Senné is almost exclusively Slovak (98.3%), with a small Czech minority (1.1%); denominationally, the Roman Catholic Church dominates with 90.3%, followed by the Greek Catholic Church with 7.2%.
geography
The municipality is located in the East Slovak lowlands on the Okna River, a right tributary of the Uh, and is at an altitude of 106 m. Senné is 17 kilometers from Michalovce and 20 kilometers from Veľké Kapušany .
The locality Senianske rybníky (or Senné rybníky , German Teiche von Senné), which is 14.4 km² in size, is of international importance . Half of it is classified as a national nature reserve and thus protected under the fifth, strictest level. It is one of the most important ornithological locations in Central Europe and has been a Ramsar reserve since 1990 .
history
A settlement in today's municipality has existed since the 9th century. A Slavic fortress called Gradište was also found north of the village . The first mention of it comes from the year 1263. In medieval documents the place is mentioned as Scinna , Zynna or Zenna . Senné belonged to the royal estate until 1263, after which it was owned by various noble families.
The place in Ung County belonged to the Kingdom of Hungary until 1919 and then became part of Czechoslovakia.
