Andrew Lloyd Webber
Andrew Lloyd Webber, Baron Lloyd-Webber , (born March 22, 1948 in London ) is a British composer . He is best known for his numerous musicals . He is an Emmy , Oscar , Tony Award and Grammy Award winner . Lloyd Webber belongs to the small group of people who have won all four major awards from the American entertainment industry ( EGOT ) in a regular competition category.
Origin and education
Andrew Lloyd Webber, the son of the composer William Lloyd Webber (1914–1982) and the pianist Jean Hermione (1921–1993), began composing at the age of six and published his first suite at the age of nine . After dropping out of history at Magdalen College , University of Oxford , he moved to the Royal College of Music in London .
Works
Webber met the copywriter Tim Rice and an intensive collaboration developed, as a result of which Rice wrote the texts for various works by Webber. Their first collaboration was the musical The Likes of Us in 1965. Numerous works followed, mainly musicals, pop songs and the score for two feature films and a requiem . Webber is the most successful musical composer today; some of his works ran for decades in well-known places such as London's West End or Broadway . His first # 1 hit in the UK was Any dream will do from Joseph . Many of his songs became world hits outside of the musical, such as Don't Cry for Me Argentina from Evita or Memory from the musical Cats .
Several of his musicals have also been filmed. The best-known film adaptations are the films Jesus Christ Superstar (1973), Evita (1996), The Phantom of the Opera (2004) and Cats (2019). Lloyd Webber also composed numerous individual songs for various purposes, for example It's Easy For You , which appeared on the last Elvis Presley studio album before his death, and Amigos Para Siempre (Friends For Life) , the official anthem of the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona sung by Sarah Brightman and José Carreras .
Lloyd Webber composed and produced the track It's My Time for the UK 's contribution to the 2009 Eurovision Song Contest . In the finale of the song contest in Moscow, the contribution took fifth place.
In 2012 he composed the official song Sing for the Diamond Jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II with Gary Barlow , which was performed at the Diamond Jubilee Concert .
Foundations and formations
In 1994, Webber founded the Open Churches Trust , which has been very successful in ensuring that churches in the UK that would otherwise be closed can be open “to provide a haven of peace, comfort and prayer for those who need it, and for those in need who would like to visit a church are allowed to enter ”.
In 1977 he founded the internationally active company Really Useful Group , which among other things holds all rights to his works. According to the Sunday Times , Andrew Lloyd Webber had a net worth of £ 800 million in 2020 , making him - along with Paul McCartney - the wealthiest musician in Great Britain.
Honors
Webber has received a number of prestigious awards for his work. These include the Oscar , an Emmy , three Grammy Awards , eight Tony Awards and a Golden Globe . He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II as a Knight Bachelor on October 29, 1992 and inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1995. In the same year he was awarded the Praemium Imperiale . On February 18, 1997 he was raised as Baron Lloyd-Webber of Sydmonton (located in the County of Hampshire ) to the Life Peer and was thus a member of the House of Lords . He was Lord of the Conservative Party there . In October 2017 he gave up this political office.
family
Webber is married for the third time. He has two children with his first wife, Sarah Hugill, whom he married on July 24, 1972; the couple divorced in 1983. His second wife was soprano Sarah Brightman , whom he married on March 22, 1984. The childless marriage ended in divorce in 1990. On February 1, 1991, he married Madeleine Gurdon, with whom he has three children.
His brother Julian is a cellist and composer.
