About this picture

Nonnweiler is the northernmost municipality in the Saarland and is located around 30 km southeast of Trier . The localities Bierfeld , Braunshausen (with Mariahütte ), Kastel, Nonnweiler, Otzenhausen , Primstal , Schwarzenbach and Sitzerath belong to it. Nonnweiler is a climatic health resort .

geography

The municipality is traversed by the Prims , which is dammed up in the district of Nonnweiler to the Primstalsperre . In the north, the Black Forest high forest , part of the Hunsrück, is also affected. Nonnweiler is a national park community in the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park .

history

The first written reference to Nonnweiler is on the "Hubertushorn" owned by the parish community and dates to 1182. The Hubertus cult, which was first mentioned in 1516, went hand in hand with the development of Nonnweiler into a place of pilgrimage. Pilgrims were those who had been healed of the "Hundswuth" by the Hubertus key. The Hubertus Brotherhood was recorded in 1759 by a bull of indulgence from the Pope . In 1828 the use of the Hubertus key and the pilgrimage to Nonnweiler were forbidden by the episcopal vicariate. In 1897 Nonnweiler was connected to Lebach by a railway line . On January 1, 1974, the municipality of Nonnweiler with the towns of Bierfeld , Braunshausen , Kastel, Otzenhausen , Primstal , Schwarzenbach and Sitzerath emerged from the Nonnweiler office . With the construction of the A1 , section Primstal-Reinsfeld, in 1973 and the handover on October 20, 1975, the municipality was connected to the network of federal motorways. On January 4, 1981, the sub-section of the A62 Otzenhausen-Türkismühle was handed over.

The construction of the Primstalsperre, which was completed in 1982, began with the construction of the motorway. Overburden resulting from the construction of the motorway was used for the dam. In 1982/83 a service water line was laid from the Primstalsperre to the Blies in Gronig , so that there was always enough cooling water available for the Bexbach power station . The route is 18.5 km long, has a diameter of 1000 mm and works entirely without pumping stations, as the inlet point is higher than the outlet point. Today several communities are supplied with drinking water from the dam.

coat of arms

The coat of arms of the municipality of Nonnweiler was awarded on December 12, 1958 to the then Amt Nonnweiler, by the Minister of the Interior of the Saarland government.

Description: The head of the shield split, the front in red a pair of tongs crossed with the golden pouring ladle, in the back three golden ears of wheat in black, below in gold on a black three-hill a red deer striding to the right.

Reason: In the representation, the coat of arms embodies the three main branches of income of the population of the municipal parts of the district of Nonnweiler past and present, its economic-geological structure as a high forest area: the foundry tongs and ladle refer to 300 years of iron processing industry (iron smelting and iron hammering) in the high forest. The ears of wheat should indicate the agricultural part of the districts. The stag is said to indicate the abundance of forests, large game hunting and the Hubertus cult. The Dreiberg symbolizes the highest elevations in the community: Dollberg (695 m, Otzenhausen), Peterberg (584 m, Braunshausen) and Benkelberg (565 m, Sitzerath). The mountains also have different heights in the coat of arms.

Economy and Infrastructure

One of the largest manufacturers of frozen pizzas in Europe, Nestlé Wagner GmbH, is based in Nonnweiler and employs around 1,800 people there (as of 2018). In addition, the spa is an important branch of the economy in town.

traffic

The municipality is connected to the national road network via the federal highways 1 ( Heiligenhafen - Saarbrücken ) and the 62 (Nonnweiler - Pirmasens ). The BAB 1 serves four connection points within the municipality: Nonnweiler-Bierfeld (135), Nonnweiler-Otzenhausen (136), Nonnweiler-Braunshausen (137) and Nonnweiler-Primstal (138). The Nonnweiler triangle connects the BAB 1 and BAB 62. The " Eichenlaubstraße " runs through several districts of the community.

The decommissioned Hochwaldbahn runs through the municipality of Nonnweiler. There were train stations in the districts of Bierfeld, Nonnweiler , Otzenhausen and Schwarzenbach. At the Primstalbahn branching off at Nonnweiler station , there were also stops in Mariahütte , Kastel and Primstal .

In the information on Braunshausen, the residents of Mariahütte are included because Mariahütte was a district of Braunshausen.

leisure

The Peterberg leisure center is located in the Braunshausen district . In summer, the longest south-west German summer toboggan run, at 1.8 kilometers, as well as other leisure facilities such as a neighboring slide paradise or a bungee trampoline can be used. Since summer 2017, a druid playground has rounded off the offer for children.

The unprofitable winter sports operation was discontinued in 2013.

religion

Hochwalddom in Nonnweiler

In the Mariahütte district there is a Protestant church, built in 1956 according to plans by building officer Heinrich Otto Vogel . In every other district there is a Roman Catholic church, although only those in Primstal and Nonnweiler are parish churches. In Schwarzenbach, the church is used by both Catholics and Protestants. The old affiliations are still visible here today, as the inhabitants of the lower village belonged to the Protestant rule of Eberswald, while the upper village was predominantly inhabited by subjects of the Archbishopric of Trier and the inhabitants therefore remained Catholic.

"Structure plan 2020"

On June 28, 2007, Bishop Reinhard Marx put the “Structural Plan 2020” into effect. As a result, the parish landscape in the Diocese of Trier is rearranged. This structure plan envisages Primstal as the office of the pastor and the parish office from 2011.

This decision met with violent protests from the parish councils of Nonnweiler-Bierfeld, Otzenhausen and Sitzerath and from the population of these places.

Culture and sights

Nonnweiler is on the Saarland circular hiking trail and is a stage destination of the Saar-Hunsrück climb . Part of the municipality also belongs to the Hunsrück-Hochwald National Park .
