South Sudan Oyee! ( English about "South Sudan, Hurray!") is the national anthem of South Sudan , which became independent on July 9, 2011. Based on a decision by President Salva Kiir in July 2019, the national anthem may only be played if the President is present.

history

Even before independence, the government appointed an eight-member committee to select the new national anthem. A competition was announced with specifications for the content of the text. This should refer, among other things, to the people and resources of South Sudan and to the war of independence . In September 2010, the committee selected ten texts from 49 submissions that could be used as the national anthem. These were then combined into two text variants. The SPLM's Politburo eventually selected one of them to be the future national anthem.

The music for it was determined in a competition, from which the music teacher Addison Arkangelo, Mido Samuel and another colleague from the University of Juba emerged as the winners. They deliberately chose a happy melody that should stand out from the Sudanese national anthem .

Originally, Land of Cush ("Land Kush") was intended as a title. The name "Kush" referred to the ancient kingdom of Kush mentioned in the Bible , the term Garden of Eden is also of biblical origin. In February 2011, the already widespread text of the anthem was modified again and the terms Cush and Eden replaced by the new state name South Sudan , which has now been established .
