History of the SportRegion Stuttgart
Between 1986 and 1991 the working group “Olympic Application Stuttgart Area” dealt with a possible application from Stuttgart for the Olympic Games . This working group led u. a. to an intermunicipal cooperation in the region. There were three commissions that dealt with the areas of “sports technology”, “infrastructure” and “culture”.
In January 1991, the association “Intercommunal Culture Promotion Region Stuttgart” was founded as the “successor” of the Culture Commission (short form: “KulturRegion Stuttgart”). At that time there was still no club formation in the sports sector, in the “Working Group Sports in the Region” the cooperation was continued in loose form.
In 1995, discussions in the field of sport were intensified again. This led to the "SportRegion Stuttgart" being founded on May 14, 1996 with the aim of improving inter-municipal cooperation in the field of sport. The inaugural meeting took place in the large meeting room of the Stuttgart city hall. Ludwigsburg's Lord Mayor Christof Eichert was elected first chairman . The founding members included 32 municipalities, 22 sports associations and the six sports circles. It was decided that Gunter H. Fahrion from the Stuttgart Sports Office should be responsible for the management. In 2002 the Lord Mayor of Sindelfingen , Bernd Vöhringer, succeeded Christof Eichert as Chairman of the SportRegion. In 2005 it was decided that the SportRegion Stuttgart should get a full-time office. On May 2, 2006, the board of the SportRegion Stuttgart elected Marc-Oliver Kochan as the first full-time managing director. At the beginning of 2007, the SportRegion Stuttgart moved into its new, approximately 70 square meter premises in the “SpOrt Stuttgart” in Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt. In 2008, Michael Bofinger, a new managing director, took over management of the office. In February 2012 Matthias Klopfer succeeded Bernd Vöhringer as Chairman.
