The Church of St. Sebastian is a Catholic parish church in Eppelborn , Saarland , in the Neunkirchen district . The patron saint of the church is St. Sebastian . In the list of monuments of the Saarland the church building is a single monument listed.

history

The " Taxa generalis " shows that Eppelborn was already a parish around 1330 , but it is not known when the first church was built in the place. It is documented that on July 25, 1398 a new church was consecrated as a successor to a church that burned down in 1395. The state of construction of this church of the late 14th century, which was the patronage of St. Mary , Maximinus, Jakobus the Elder. Ä. and Maria Magdalena and only from 1739, according to a documentary mention, had St. Sebastian as the only patron, deteriorated so much over the centuries that a new church building had to be built in 1760. The four-story tower and the east-facing choir have been preserved in their original form from this building to this day.

The 18th century church underwent renovation and expansion measures from 1879 to 1881, during which the main axis was relocated in a north-south direction. A three-aisled nave with a south-facing five-sided choir and a sacristy were added to the nave of the church from 1760 . The plans for this came from the architect Carl Friedrich Müller ( Saarlouis ), while master mason Chr. Reuter and carpenter J. Thome (both St. Wendel ) were responsible for the execution .

From 1910 to 1912 another renovation was carried out according to plans by the architect Ernst Brand ( Trier ), during which the north side of the old church was broken up and given more emphasis by a central projecting about one and a half meters in front . In addition, the main entrance has been moved there.

Today's barrel vault with belt arches was built into the interior , and eight round pillars were replaced by mighty stone pillars supporting the vault . Between 1934 and 1938, the entrance area in the north facade was expanded with two additional entrances and the erection of a triangular gable above the main entrance. From 1982 to 1984 renovation work was carried out , during which the altar island was rebuilt, the high altar was renovated and partially redesigned, the gallery was redesigned, a new floor was installed and the church windows were renewed. The work was led by the architect Elmar Kraemer ( Saarbrücken ). In 1999 the choir was converted from 1760 into a sacrament chapel.

Church building

Inner

Inside the church, the high altar made by the sculptor Johann Mettler ( Morbach ), which was probably erected at Christmas 1916, is important. In the base, in the middle of the altar table, there is a mosaic picture in the form of a medallion , which shows the Easter lamb with the victory flag. This part of the altar is covered with gray-green marble on the front , while the altar plate is made of dark basalt . A wood-carved crucifixion group is located above the altar table with the suspension throne. Above it, God the Father is enthroned with outspread arms and the Holy Spirit in the form of the dove . A cross towers over the round arch . The upper part of the high altar was destroyed by fire on June 1, 1982. The restorers from Mrziglod ( Tholey ) restored the altar, which had to be completely removed and brought to Tholey. The sculptor Georg Gehring ( Adenau ) was responsible for the necessary wood carvings .

In the set up in 1999 Sacrament chapel is a mosaic - Resurrection scene of the glass painter and mosaic artist Ferdinand Selgrad ( Schiffweiler ) from 1962, and the baptismal font and the old communion rail .

The church windows in the neo-baroque style, which were renewed in 1983, were designed by the glass painter Jakob Schwarzkopf (Trier); the execution was carried out by the company Glasmalerei Binsfeld (Trier).

Exterior construction

The tower from 1760 is 35 meters high. It is divided into four floors by stone bands that taper towards the top. The corners are cuboid . In the basement there is a portal with a round arch, above which a keystone with the year 1760 reminds of the year the tower and the church were built. On the tower there is an octagonal slate-covered pointed helmet with a tower cross and a cock .

The north facade of the church got its current appearance through renovation and extension work in 1910/12 and 1934/38. Part of the facade is a central risalit in which the main entrance with two side entrances is located, which is formed by a round arch portal with two supporting pillars, a putti-like figure and a shell-shaped ornament above the keystone. As crown rises above the main one in the architecture so called frontispiece , a triangular pediment. Above it stands the statue of the church patron St. Sebastian in a niche . Four pilasters , flat wall pillars made of sandstone , rise from the foundation at the front , which are interrupted above the second floor by an entablature , horizontal stone bands, and then continue in a gable triangle to the eaves . The round window in the top of the gable and two arched windows underneath contribute to the further structure.

organ

The organ of the church was built in 1984 as Opus 218 by Hugo Mayer Orgelbau ( Heusweiler ) and has 40 registers , distributed over three manuals and pedal . The housing in the classical style is made of oak and glazed in medium brown. The slider chests -instrument is situated on a gallery. The action mechanism is mechanical, the stop action is electric.
