Amsterdam Zuid Station ( German  Amsterdam Südbahnhof ) is a through station of the Dutch railway company NS in the south of the Dutch capital Amsterdam . This station is served by long-distance, regional and local trains.

Geographical location

The platforms of the metro

The train station is about 5 km south of Amsterdam Central Station. It is located between the two lanes of the Amsterdam ring road in the Zuideramstel district .

investment

The station is a through station , with seven tracks on four platforms . Local and long-distance trains stop at tracks 1-4, while metro lines 50 and 51 use the three northern platforms.

history

The station was opened with the opening of the Amsterdam Zuid – Schiphol section of the Weesp – Leiden line on December 21, 1978. In July 1985 the station was named Amsterdam Zuid WTC , because of the nearby newly built WorldTradeCenter (WTC for short) in the Amsterdam Zuid district . On December 10, 2006, the station was given its current old name again. The M50 and M51 of the Amsterdam Metro have been running through the station since December 1990. The Noord-Zuidlijn (north-south line), which is served by the M52 metro line, was opened to Amsterdam Zuid station on July 21, 2018. In addition, since May 2008, line 5 of the Amsterdam tram has stopped below the station.

Planning

The Dutch government is planning to relocate long-distance traffic from Amsterdam Centraal to Amsterdam Zuid as far as possible in order to avoid trains having to turn around in the central station and to increase the number of train dispatches there. To this end, the number of platforms in the Südbahnhof is to be increased from four to six. The overall measure is to last until 2030. The Nederlandse Spoorwegen (NS) as the main user of the main train station, however, oppose this operating concept, with which they do not agree.

Zuidasdok

As part of the Zuidasdok urban development project , the Amsterdam Zuid train station is to be modernized and converted into a so-called Openbaar Vervoer Terminal ( German:  "Public Transport Terminal" ), where the center of various means of transport is to be located. With the opening of the Noord-Zuidlijn in 2018 and the growth in passenger traffic on the Schiphol – Amsterdam – Almere – Lelystad railway line, an increase in travelers to 250,000 people per day is expected. Since Rijksweg 10 is to be underpassed in the area of the Amsterdam Zuid and Amsterdam RAI stations , there is room for an extension of the Amsterdam Zuid station. Therefore, a new bus station as well as a tram stop, new bicycle stations , stops for taxis and a K&R area are to be built at the train station . In addition, two passages are to be expanded or newly built. The Minervapassage is to be rebuilt with shops and widened to 40 meters. In addition, the Brittenpassage is to be redesigned, 15 meters wide and with shops on one side. The underground station, which was previously located east of the Minervapassage , is to be built between the passages. In the track area, the platforms are to be widened and equipped with new roofs. The construction work has been underway since 2019 and is being carried out by ZuidPlus , a cooperation between the companies Fluor , Heijmans and Hochtief . The municipality of Amsterdam, ProRail and Rijkswaterstaat are also involved in the project, which is financed by the Dutch state, the municipality of Amsterdam, the province of Noord-Holland , the Vervoerregio Amsterdam and in part by the Nederlandse Spoorwegen . The construction work is expected to be completed in the middle of 2025.Template: future / in 5 years
