Stonington is a town in Hancock County in the state of Maine in the United States . In 2010 there were 1,043 inhabitants in 515 households on an area of ​​97.9 km².

As early as 1605, George Weymouth was the first European to enter the area. The area was settled from 1762 and was initially called Greens Landing . When Stonington separated from Deer Isle and was organized as an independent town on February 18, 1897, it was given its current name. The split was preceded by a dispute over the construction of roads and the use of tax revenues.

A major economic factor in Stonington at the end of the 19th and beginning of the 20th century was, in addition to fishing, the granite industry. At times up to 4,000 people lived in the town. Tourism also started at this time. After the decline of the granite industry, fishing remained an important economic factor.
