Telgárt (1948 to 1990 Slovak "Švermovo"; German Thiergarten , Hungarian Garamfő - until 1902 Telgárt ) is a municipality in Slovakia on the southeastern edge of the Low Tatras on the upper reaches of the Hron River .
history
Telgárt was first mentioned in a document in 1326. The name is of German origin ( zoo ) and means something like game reserve, wild forest. The majority of the almost exclusively Slovak population adopted the Greek Catholic faith at the instigation of the governor of Hont County , General Stephan II. Koháry , at the beginning of the 18th century .
Towards the end of the Second World War Telgárt was one of the centers of the Slovak National Uprising and was largely destroyed in a punitive measure by the German occupiers on September 5, 1944.
After the war the place was rebuilt and named in communist Czechoslovakia after Jan Šverma - one of the leaders of the Slovak national uprising. This designation was canceled in 1990 at the request of the local population, since the place name T. was still in common use and, moreover, Šverma had never been to Telgárt.
Today Telgárt is characterized by agriculture and tourism.
