Tavares is a city and also the county seat of Lake County in the US state of Florida with 13,951 inhabitants (as of 2010).
geography
Tavares is about 40 km northwest of Orlando and is surrounded by three lakes, Lake Dora , Lake Eustis and Lake Harris . In the northeast, Tavares borders the city of Eustis .
history
The place was first opened here by railroad in 1884 by the Leesburg and Indian River Railroad from Wildwood . In 1887 the Sanford and Lake Eustis Railroad followed . The line from Sanford to Tavares was closed in the 1980s between Sanford and Sorrento . Today the Florida Central Railroad operates between Tavares and Sorrento and to Umatilla , Orlando and Winter Garden . From 2011 to 2017 the tourist Tavares, Eustis and Gulf Railroad also operated there.
Demographic data
According to the 2010 census, the then 13,951 inhabitants were distributed over 7,705 households. The population density was 758.2 inh / km². 84.3% of the population identified themselves as whites , 10.2% as African American , 0.4% as Indians and 1.7% as Asian Americans . 1.7% said they belonged to another ethnic group and 1.8% to several ethnic groups. 7.8% of the population was made up of Hispanics or Latinos .
In 2010 children under 18 years of age and 51.6% of all households lived in 19.6% of all households with persons at least 65 years of age. 61.9% of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring). The average household size was 2.12 people and the average family size was 2.61 people.
17.8% of the population were younger than 20 years old, 19.7% were 20 to 39 years old, 21.0% were 40 to 59 years old, and 41.5% were at least 60 years old. The mean age was 53 years. 48.9% of the population were male and 51.1% were female.
The median annual income was $ 38,543, with 18.0% of the population living below the poverty line.
In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 94.31% of the population, 3.97% spoke Spanish and 1.72% had another mother tongue.

The Harry C. Duncan House and the Lake County Courthouse are in National Register of Historic Places listed.

Tavares is crossed by US Highway 441 and Florida State Road 19 . the nearest airport is Orlando Sanford International Airport (approximately 50 km east).
crime
The crime rate in 2010 was 140 points (US average: 266 points) in the low range. There were three rapes, seven robberies, 25 assaults, 42 break-ins, 146 thefts and 22 car thefts.
