Blues Brothers 2000 is the sequel to the 1980 cult film Blues Brothers, produced in 1998 and directed by John Landis .
action
The plot begins 18 years after the end of the first film: Released from prison, Elwood J. Blues learns of the deaths of his brother Jake and his father substitute Curtis (in the previous film John Belushi and Cab Calloway , who had actually died in the meantime). His former tutor, mother Mary from the orphanage, hires him as a mentor for the ten-year-old Buster, who is under guardianship . He also learns from her that Curtis had an illegitimate son named Cabel ( Cab ) Chamberlain, who is therefore his step-brother.
Elwood immediately visits Cab at his place of work, the local police, but cannot persuade him to cooperate. However, Buster steals his wallet, the contents of which are invested in a new Bluesmobile , a used police vehicle. In the meantime, he and Buster find accommodation in the strip club of his old bandmate Willie (" Too Big " Hall). The attempt to prevent the Russian mafia from extorting protection money provokes them to such an extent that they raid and destroy the nightclub. Thus unemployed and homeless, Elwood decides to bring the Blues Brothers Band back together. Starting with Willie and his waiter Mac, who turns out to be a good singer, the old bandmates have to be visited and persuaded to give up their current jobs and go on tour again. The Russian mafia is provoked again, so that they become constant persecutors alongside the police (because of the theft of the wallet). By the way, the band also becomes hostile to a paramilitary , nationalist group. The old manager of the Blues Brothers, Maury Sline, helps to an appearance at a fair and promises a great appearance in Louisiana with Queen Mousette . In the further course, an empty gas tank leads to the crossroads: continue or give up?
The band walked to the joint tent mission of the Preachers Rvd. Cleophus T. James and Rvd. Morris, where the chasing police arrive. Cab is converted here and joins the Blues Brothers. Finally, the band entered the estate of the voodoo priestess Queen Mousette in a musical contest against The Louisiana Gator Boys , which they did not win, but ended with a brilliant jam session for both bands. Queen Mousette neutralizes the persecuting Russian mafia and the American paramilitaries with her magic. To save Buster from returning to the orphanage, Elwood goes on the run with him again.
criticism
The film received mostly negative reviews from critics in the United States because they felt it was too similar to the 1980 film Blues Brothers . While the score was considered successful, the film failed to establish itself. Landis' work was discontinued in some cinemas after just two weeks.
“Continuation of the film 'Blues Brothers' (1979), which, despite the numerous stars of the rhythm & blues, rock'n'roll and country scene, never meets the chaotic, exuberant mood of the original and is more boring than entertaining due to its loveless design . "
Other critical voices accuse the producers of the film that the work was produced at the lowest possible cost. The film is said to have been shot almost exclusively in Canada to circumvent demands from the California actors' union.
In order to make the film "family-friendly" by US standards, there is neither smoking (except in the Russian club house) nor cursing ("slip of the tongue" from Elwood in the presence of Mother Mary is immediately stopped by corporal punishment). In the first film, both are done abundantly, according to the characters.
With a budget of 28 million, the film only grossed just over 14 million dollars worldwide, making it a flop .
The German Film and Media Assessment FBW in Wiesbaden awarded the film the rating "valuable".
