List of bird paintings by Albert Eckhout in the Hoflößnitz
The list of bird paintings by Albert Eckhout in the Hoflößnitz represents the 80 bird oil paintings by the Dutch painter Albert Eckhout (* approx. 1607 in Groningen ; † 1665 or 1666 ibid) on the ceiling of the Hoflößnitz ballroom, which is there in the mountain and Lusthaus (castle) is located. The paintings were created between 1653 and 1659 and mainly show birds from Brazil.
The Hoflößnitz, at that time the electoral Saxon winery of Johann Georg I (1585–1656) or his successor Johann Georg II (1613–1680, elector from 1656), is located in the Oberlößnitz district of the Saxon city of Radebeul . It is a cultural monument that is located in the historical vineyard landscape of Radebeul and today, as a municipal winery, belongs to the large-scale wine-growing area Radebeuler Lößnitz , single site Radebeuler Goldener Wagen . The Berg- und Lusthaus is part of the local Saxon Wine Museum Hoflößnitz .
Historical background
The templates
During the Dutch colonial history of North Brazil ( Dutch Brazil ), which lasted almost 25 years from 1630 , Eckhout took part in the eight-year expedition to Brazil (1637-1644) carried out by Governor General Johann Moritz von Nassau-Siegen ("The Brazilian") (1604–1679) ) part. Other participants were the geographer and astronomer Georg Markgraf (1611–1644), the landscape painter Frans Post (1612–1680), the personal physician Willem Piso (1611–1678), the kitchen clerk Zacharias Wagner (1614–1668) and the soldier Caspar Schmalkalden ( 1616-1673). The tasks involved surveying the land, exploring the region and its inhabitants, and documenting the landscape, flora and fauna.
Eckhout particularly portrayed the people and the flora and fauna of the surrounding area, but also the souvenirs from the expeditions. They explored the coast between 5 degrees and 11 degrees south latitude and inland up to 80 miles along the larger rivers. Some acquisitions by Dutch trade expeditions also came from Chile, the Caribbean and South West Africa.
More than a thousand sketches, drawings and oil paintings were created. The landscape pictures and other larger paintings went different ways. The approximately 800 pictures of people, flora and fauna remained together and were sold in 1652 by Johann Moritz von Nassau-Siegen to the Brandenburg Elector Friedrich Wilhelm and came into the possession of the royal library, which later became the Prussian State Library . His personal physician, the botanist Christian Mentzel , created the four volumes of the Theatrum rerum naturalium Brasiliae from pictures assigned to Eckhout :
- Icones Aquatilium (69 pictures, aquatic animals; signature of the Prussian State Library: Liber Picturatus A 32)
- Icones Volatilium (111 pictures, birds; signature of the Prussian State Library: Liber Picturatus A 33)
- Icones Animalium (65 pictures, land animals; signature of the Prussian State Library: Liber Picturatus A 34)
- Icones Vegetabilium (172 pictures, plants; signature of the Prussian State Library: Liber Picturatus A 35)
as well as another volume, which contained paintings and drawings that were not sorted:
- Miscellanea Cleyeri (35 different pictures, named after Andreas Cleyer ; signature of the Prussian State Library: Liber Picturatus A 38)
In addition, Friedrich Wilhelm received two further illustrated books from Johann Moritz, the watercolors and sketches of which were painted directly on the bound sheets and were probably made by Georg Markgraf:
- Libri Principis . Volume 1. (193 animal pictures, including 85 birds; signature of the Prussian State Library: Liber Picturatus A 36)
- Libri Principis . Volume 2. (185 plant drawings; signature of the Prussian State Library: Liber Picturatus A 37)
All seven works were kept together and later summarized by the Prussian State Library with the specified numbering in seven volumes as Libri Picturati A 32 to A 38. During the Second World War , these volumes were relocated and disappeared. About 30 years after the end of the war, it became known that they are in the Jagiellonian Library in Krakow.
In addition to the images compiled in these seven volumes, the Historia Naturalis Brasiliae was the result of research into Brazil . This consists of four volumes on tropical medicine by Willem Piso and eight volumes on plants, animals, meteorology, ethnology and geography. The basis of these eight volumes were the insights of the Margrave, who died early and which were noted on individual slips of paper and published in 1648 by the Leiden scholar Johannes de Laet .
The ceiling pictures
Presumably through the mediation of Johann Moritz von Nassau-Siegen, Eckhout was called to the electoral Saxon court in 1653 to decorate the eight by eight meter ballroom ceiling in the pleasure and mountain house of Hoflößnitz for Johann Georg I. He should bring along all drawings and sketches still in his possession.
Eckhout painted the pictures on canvases without taking into account the wooden frame that was later used for fastening. This means that parts of birds that have moved far outwards (feet, tails or heads) are covered by the frame. Ten pictures were placed side by side in a row, eight such rows between the ceiling beams make up the ceiling mirror. 74 paintings have a size of about 90 cm × 75 cm, the others are smaller due to the adaptation to the ceiling conditions.
The arrangement of the birds in the ceiling plan does not result in a recognizable sequence, neither according to habitat nor according to the systematic classification. Some birds appear multiple times. 45 of the 88 birds shown go back to both the Icones Volatilium and the Libri Principis . 33 birds can only be found in the Icones Volatilium and 7 can only be found in the Libri Principis . Arara (No. 2), Quelele (No. 24) and Guara (No. 49) are not based on any of these templates.
During the Second World War, color photos of the ceiling paintings were taken in 1943/1944 as part of the “Führer mandate for color photography”, which are now in the historical color slide archive for wall and ceiling painting at the Central Institute for Art History in Munich.
In the 1990s, the pictures were removed and restored with the help of funds from the Messerschmidt Foundation. The Deutsche Fotothek's holdings contain black and white scans of photos after the restoration, which can be compared with those from 1965. Since the restoration, the bird paintings can be viewed again in the ballroom.
List of bird pictures
The columns used in the table list the information explained below. All columns come from Quaisser 2001, supplemented by the Additional Name column in order to be able to create links to existing Wikipedia articles.
- No .: Numbering from 1 to 80. (This numbering refers to Ferrão & Monteiro Soares 1997.)
- Picture name : The Indian bird name noted on the picture (possibly also two or three names, some had to be corrected based on the picture compared to the list).
- German name : The translation of the historical picture names to a German trivial name is done in Quaisser / Magirius 2001 using Hans Edmund Wolters 1982 as a reference.
- Another name : Another name as it is used here on Wikipedia as a lemma title. (If the article does not yet exist, the genus, subfamily and / or family is also given in brackets.)

Ceiling mirror and room view
Spatial location (the large ceiling image is created when you lie on the floor with your head facing the west wall):
- Above is the west wall with the central chimney, on both sides of which doors lead into the elector's rooms.
- Below is the east wall with the central chimney, on both sides of which doors lead into the Electress's rooms.
- On the left is the north wall with the central entrance from the staircase tower.
- On the right is the south wall with the windows.
- The fifth picture in the top row and the first picture in the fourth row are upside down because of the cutouts that are adapted to the wall contour.
- Presumably, the upper half of the ceiling paintings was formerly oriented towards the middle, so it stood upside down like the two cut paintings compared to here.
- Clicking on the picture jumps to the explanation line above for the respective bird picture.
With the view of the stairwell entrance on the north side or the grand square on the south side, the following room view results:
