The University Hospital of the Ruhr University Bochum (UK RUB) is an association of eight university hospitals and other affiliated facilities of the Ruhr University Bochum .

history

When the Ruhr-Universität Bochum was founded in the early 1960s, it was planned as a full university with natural science , engineering , humanities faculties and a faculty for medicine . At that time it was planned to build a clinic on the university campus , and the first institute buildings for medicine and a nurses' dormitory were built before 1970, the later (now demolished) University Tower West.

The first clinic of the Ruhr University Bochum was in Essen : In the absence of a functioning clinic, the Essen Clinic, which previously served as Clinic II of the University of Münster , was incorporated into the RUB on January 10, 1967 . In 1972, however , the Essen University Hospital was spun off from the Ruhr University and transferred to the newly founded University of Essen .

In view of financial bottlenecks, which prevented the completion of the originally planned university clinic on campus, and political problems with the expansion of the medical faculty in Bochum in the 1970s, especially after the loss of the Essen university clinic, the Bochum model was initially adopted on January 25, 1977 as a temporary contract to non-state-owned clinics in Bochum and the surrounding area to fulfill obligations in research and teaching .

In 1998, the cooperation between the clinics and the Ruhr University Bochum was permanently established. On this basis, the Association Clinic of the Ruhr University Bochum was founded in September 2008 with coordinating tasks in clinical, scientific and didactic areas.

On May 6, 2015, the Ruhr-Universität Bochum, the houses already belonging to the clinic and four other hospitals from Ostwestfalen-Lippe signed a contract that deals with the expansion of the UK RUB to include members of the Minden-Herford bidding consortium. This means that 60 additional clinical study places have been available since the 2016/2017 winter semester. The capacity of the university hospital has thus increased to around 5000 beds.

In 2016 the Mühlenkreiskliniken became shareholders of the association with a share of 12.5%. In June 2016, the Mühlenkreiskliniken celebrated the topping-out ceremony for the campus building on the grounds of the Minden Clinic together with the Herford Clinic. In October 2016, around 70 students from the Ruhr University Bochum started their seventh semester here.

organization

The University Clinic of the Ruhr University Bochum is a voluntary association of the participating clinics on the basis of a statute . The shareholders' meeting determines a commercial and a medical director .

In 2013 there were 3,643 beds in the hospital network . 124,034 patients were treated as inpatients, 860 as part-time inpatients and 319,468 as outpatients. 7,116 full-time employees were employed, and a further 1,111 full-time employees in subsidiaries. In addition, there were 813 apprenticeships (excluding university places).

Critique of the Science Council

In its report on the university medicine of North Rhine-Westphalia in 2019 , the Science Council expressed extensive criticism of the Bochum model as the basis for the structure of the UK RUB. The contracts with almost exclusively non-state-owned clinics do not provide for the necessary participation of the medical faculty, the university and the state on the boards or supervisory boards of the clinics. Synergy effects between the different locations did not develop sufficiently. In addition, research and teaching as well as innovations and quality assurance would be hindered.
