geography

Geographical location

View from Oberdrackenstein over Unterdrackenstein to the Drackensteiner slope
Unterdrackenstein situated on a tufa - Terrace on the slopes of Gosbachtals

Drackenstein lies on the slope between the Gosbachtal and the plateau of the Swabian Alb , about 25 km from the district town of Göppingen . Several karst springs emerge from the limestone layers of the Alb from the slopes of the deeply cut Gosbach valley . They feed the Gosbach, which is saturated with chemically dissolved lime. From the main karst spring in the "Schloßbuckel" district above the suburb of "Unterdrackenstein", the Gosbach flows quickly over a 20 m wide terrace made of limestone tuff and plunges about 20 m into the valley at the edge of the terrace as a waterfall. The church, cemetery and a few houses are on this terrace. The Gosbach today flows verdolt by among them.

The waterfall flows over mighty, largely moss-covered deposits of limestone tuff, it and the terrace have accumulated over the course of centuries ( natural monument ). As is usual geologically, there are several " primary caves " in the mighty limestone tufa terrace , including the "Mariengrotte", which, together with the church, was a place of consecration. In earlier times, water was a precious commodity on the plateau of the Swabian Alb. Therefore there was a hydraulic ram in Unterdrackenstein that pumped water to Oberdrackenstein. With the connection to the Lake Constance water supply in the 20th century, these problems are a thing of the past.

On the opposite Drackensteiner slope the roadway of the federal highway 8 runs in the direction of Stuttgart . There was the Drachenloch , a cave that was filled in when the highway was built. It is believed that the name of the community goes back to a legend about the dragon hole.

Neighboring communities

The community borders in the north on Bad Ditzenbach , in the southeast on Merklingen in the Alb-Donau district , in the southwest on Hohenstadt and in the west on the city of Wiesensteig and Mühlhausen im Täle .

politics

Administrative association

Together with Gruibingen , Hohenstadt , Mühlhausen im Täle and the town of Wiesensteig , the municipality has formed the Upper Filstal Municipal Administration Association since 1972 .

Municipal council

The local council in Drackenstein has eight members. In the local elections on May 26, 2019 , the local council was elected by majority vote. Majority voting takes place if no or only one nomination has been submitted. The applicants with the highest number of votes are then elected. The municipal council consists of the voluntary councilors and the mayor as chairman. The mayor is entitled to vote in the municipal council. The turnout was 67.8% (2014: 67.9%).

mayor

Roland Lang was elected honorary mayor in 2019. He succeeds Klaus-Dieter Apelt (independent), who was mayor of the city of Wiesensteig until 2010. Since the community has fewer than 500 inhabitants, it is not entitled to a full-time mayor. His predecessor Herbert Gerber (CDU), who also held office in Wiesensteig and Drackenstein at the same time, was the longest-serving mayor in Baden-Württemberg with a term of 42 years.

coat of arms

The blazon of the municipal coat of arms of Drackenstein reads: In gold on a green three-mountain, a fire-breathing red dragon .

This talking local coat of arms was proposed by the archive directorate in Stuttgart in 1959 and awarded together with the red and yellow flag on December 15 of the same year by the Ministry of the Interior.

Economy and Infrastructure

traffic

The two districts of Ober- and Unterdrackenstein are connected by a district road. Several district roads lead from the community to the neighboring communities of Gosbach, Hohenstadt, Merklingen and Machtolsheim. There are also small communal roads to Wiesensteig and the Geislingen district of Aufhausen. The old road from Gosbach via Großmannshof to Oberdrackenstein is also passable for through traffic. The A8 motorway can be reached via the Mühlhausen and Merklingen junctions in approx. 7 km and 9 km respectively. The Hohenstadt temporary exit is only about 4 km from Drackenstein.

Due to the small number of inhabitants, local public transport is only poorly developed. Bus route 35 Deggingen - Hohenstadt runs through the municipality . The travel times are largely tailored to the schools in Bad Ditzenbach and Deggingen. Sometimes there is a connection to the buses to Göppingen and Geislingen in Bad Ditzenbach or Deggingen . In the evenings and on weekends there is only an on- call bus .

education

Drackenstein no longer has its own school. The former schoolhouse, which stood next to the church and the cemetery in Unterdrackenstein, was demolished in 2016. Today the Drackensteiner children attend the elementary school in Bad Ditzenbach, the secondary school with Werkrealschule or Realschule in Deggingen or the grammar schools in Geislingen. In Oberdrackenstein there is a kindergarten for children from 2 to 6 years.

Companies

Drackenstein is still an agricultural village today. There are also several smaller companies. On the outskirts towards Hohenstadt there is a quarry with an attached construction and haulage company.

religion

In Unterdrackenstein is the Catholic St. Michaelskirche with the cemetery. There is also a Catholic chapel in Oberdrackenstein. Since only a few Protestants lived in Drackenstein until modern times , there is no Protestant church.
