The Central Waterways and Shipping Directorate (WSD Mitte) was a federal agency and subordinated to the Federal Ministry for Transport, Building and Urban Development (BMVBS). The seat was in Hanover .

On May 1, 2013, the authority initially became a branch of the General Directorate for Waterways and Shipping (GDWS) and, with the entry into force of the WSV Responsibility Adjustment Act (Federal Law Gazette Part 1 No. 24, 2016, p. 1257ff), it became the Hanover location on June 1, 2016 the GDWS.
