William P. Murphy (1934)

William Parry Murphy (born February 6, 1892 in Stoughton , Wisconsin , † October 9, 1987 in Brookline , Massachusetts ) was an American physician and Nobel Prize winner in medicine.

Life

Murphy was born in 1892 to Pastor Thomas Francis Murphy and his wife Rose Anna Parry. After attending school in Wisconsin and Oregon , he moved to the University of Oregon , where he received his bachelor's degree in 1914 . He then worked as a math and physics teacher in Oregon and began studying medicine in Portland , Chicago in 1916 . With the support of a scholarship, he moved to Harvard Medical School in Boston in 1919 . He graduated in 1922 and began working as a continuing education assistant at Rhode Island Hospital for two years. He then moved to Harvard as an assistant, where he also took on teaching duties from 1928. From 1935 he became an associate in medicine at Harvard and from 1948 a lecturer .

Murphy married Pearl Harriet Adams in 1919, with whom he had a son and a daughter.

research

Murphy did significant work on the effect of insulin on diabetes .

He , George R. Minot and George Hoyt Whipple received the 1934 Nobel Prize for Physiology or Medicine for their liver therapy against pernicious anemia .
