origin
The name is of Slavic origin and literally means “power and fame” (cf. Polish “władza” (rule, power, violence) and “sława” (fame)). One theory has it that the name was originally borrowed from Bulgarian . In Bulgaria, the name Wladislaw is historically documented for the first time for the tsar Ivan Wladislaw (1015-1018). The name later found its way to Hungary and via Poland to the Czech Republic . In Polish usage, the name form Władysław ( ) is mostly used, there is also the alternative form Włodzisław . It is not known which of the two Polish forms was used first. Ladislaus used to be the name of a saint in Germany.
