history
Until the 19th century
The community was first mentioned in 1094 as Horguncella . The origin of this place name has not yet been clearly established. With the exception of Tepfenhart in Baden, the area of today's municipality belonged to the Reichsabbey Weingarten until 1803 and then came with this to the newly founded Kingdom of Württemberg in 1806 , where it belonged to the Oberamt Ravensburg , the forerunner of today's district .
Community merger
The community was founded on March 1, 1972 from the merger of the communities Hasenweiler, Kappel, Wolketsweiler and Zogenweiler . The place Horgenzell was then a district of Wolketsweiler.
Incorporations
- December 1, 1974: Tepfenhart (area around Ravensburg)

The evangelical parish of Wilder-Winterbach has members who live in 60 villages, hamlets and individual farms in the entire area of the parish of Horgenzell and in the Ravensburg town of Schmalegg . The community is with some bus lines u. a. connected with Ravensburg and belongs to the Bodensee-Oberschwaben Verkehrsverbund (bodo) .
Except for the district of Horgenzell, the suburbs have no street names. The plots are numbered street by street, so that the streets are named for example with "1-99". The address is then made up of the suburb and the house number, e.g. B. "Wilhelmskirch 372". In this way, the formerly independent communities and residential areas were able to keep their place names even after the community reform.
Broadcasting station
In the Wilhelmskirch district, the Ravensburg transmitter for medium wave was operated from 1951 to 2015 . From here, Deutsche Telekom broadcast the Deutschlandfunk program on the 756 kHz frequency with an output of 100 kW. The broadcasting of Deutschlandfunk ended on December 31, 2015.The transmitters were dismantled and scrapped on January 24, 2018. With that, two landmarks of this region that could be seen from afar disappeared.

Horgenzell is the seat of a community school , which is attended by students from Horgenzell and the surrounding communities.
