Abersee (until the end of 1979 Zinkenbach ) is a place in the northeast of the Austrian state of Salzburg and is located in the Salzburg-Umgebung district . It is part of the municipalities of Sankt Gilgen on the Wolfgangsee and belongs to the Salzkammergut region . The place is also known for the Zinkenbach painters' colony that used to be located there .

The place is about 6 kilometers south-east of St. Gilgen and 5 kilometers west of Strobl .

Abersee ( 560  m above sea level ) is located on the southern shore of Lake Wolfgang on the Zinkenbach peninsula , a flat alluvial cone of the Zinkenbach that flows through the village and forms the border between the communities of St. Gilgen and Strobl. The lake has its narrowest point between Abersee and St. Wolfgang.

The south side of the village is bounded by the northeastern roof of the Osterhorn group , namely by the Breitenberg  ( 1260  m above sea level ), a foothill of the Königsberger Horn . The northern part of Abersee, which belongs to St. Gilgen, lies in the cadastral community and village of Gschwand , the southern smaller part in the cadastral community and village of Gschwendt, which belongs to Strobl . The location includes around 90 houses.

history

Naming

The name Abersee goes back to the early Middle Ages and was first documented in 788 as Abriani lacus as the name for the Wolfgangsee. Later the name was transferred to the area of ​​today's municipality of Strobl. After the place Strobl got its current name, the name Abersee was retained for the rest of the area and is still present locally. Even today, the Wolfgangsee is known locally on the Untersee (eastern part) as Abersee , and a local history museum in Strobl bears the name Aberseer Heimathaus . The name Zinkenbach was used for the place Abersee until the end of 1979 , a transfer from the stream of the same name , which flows down from the southwestern Hohen Zinken ( 1764  m above sea level ). At the beginning of 1980 the place was renamed Abersee .

The name Abersee is therefore also used for the entire settlement area along the Zinkenbach from Abersee to its confluence with the Wolfgangsee, i.e. for a distance of around 2.3 km, which includes the locality of Langgassen and the town of Reith . In the broadest sense, the catchment area of ​​the post office corresponds to the entire Zinkenbach peninsula ( zip code 5342  Abersee ), including the Franzosenschanze . This includes (as of 2017) around 500 addresses, 300 of them in St. Gilgen and 200 in Strobl.

Local history

In 1874 a one-class elementary school was founded in Zinkenbach, which initially attended around 50 students. At the beginning, the dance hall in the local mill served as a teaching facility and classroom. A newly built schoolhouse was only opened a year later.

On today's B158 there was a toll booth at the bridge over the Zinkenbach until the 19th century. From 1893 until it was discontinued in 1957, there was an Ischlerbahn stop in Abersee (Salzkammergut-Lokalbahn, SKLB) .

Between 1927 and 1938 several Austrian artists settled here, mainly from Vienna, such as Ludwig Heinrich Jungnickel , Franz von Zülow , Josef Dobrowsky , Georg Ehrlich and Leo Delitz . Today the Museum Zinkenbacher Malerkolonie commemorates this time.

A post office was established in 1956 and a newly built Catholic church was consecrated in 1986.

Infrastructure

In addition to agriculture, tourism is of economic importance.

The road from Salzburg to Bad Ischl is today's Wolfgangsee Straße  (B158), which passes the place on a bypass route. The place can be reached by post bus . A 1.5 km long connecting road to Reith leads to the shore of Lake Wolfgang.

  • Zinkenbacher Painters Colony Museum
  • The Blue Dome exhibition building is a building with 1000 m² of exhibition space and an attached 2500 m² garden. It deals with the phenomenon of water in interactive and informative exhibits. At the end of October 2007 the water adventure world, which only opened in June 2006, had to cease operations and file for bankruptcy due to a lack of visitor interest. Now the facility is called Abarena (made up of Abersee and Arena ) and is intended for special exhibitions. A dinosaur exhibition is currently being shown, with around 50 life-size animal models on view outside.
  • Arboretum on the Zinkenbach, on the mountain side of the village: This small tree park presents the typical vegetation communities of the area. It was erected in 2013 when the new bed load barriers were being built.
