history

Until the 18th century

The earliest mention of the nobles of Aichheim was in the document of March 25, 1128, issued in the Grafenthing zu Illertissen under the chairmanship of Count Eberhard von Kirchberg. Adalbert von Aichheim was among the seven free witnesses. The noble free of Aichheim achieved an important position in the Swabian nobility in the 12th century, but were not ministerials to the Tübingen Count Palatine. After the death of the last Aichheimer, Berthold (1330), the rule of Aichheim passed to Konrad von Rechberg, who had married Berthold's daughter, Luitgard. He took possession of the already existing Aichheim Castle. In the period that followed, the von Rechberg family united several lords between Iller and Lech in their hands. As the center of their new rulership, they built a mighty castle between 1420 and 1460 and built a craftsmen's settlement to the east, which took the name Überaichheim. The old settlement abandoned by the rulers was henceforth called "Old City", from which the current place name Altenstadt is derived. This settlement, once the seat of the ruler, from then on led a rural life as a small village, like the other small settlements around the new center of Überichen, which is now called Illereichen. This new place developed rapidly and was soon more than twice the size of Altenstadt. Up until the 18th century, Altenstadt was an insignificant farming village off the road.

Today's town center, the business center on Staatsstrasse 2031, was not built until around 1720. At that time, several houses were built outside of the Christian settlement for the Jewish families that had appeared in large numbers in the Illiche rulership since the end of the 17th century and from 1718/19 were left to them on a rental basis. In 1719 the Jewish community was allowed to build a synagogue , which they did immediately. The wooden church stood until 1802. In 1721, the Jews acquired the right to settle disputes in their own ranks by purchasing them from the rulers, and a year later they also received permission to build a synagogue. Gradually the Altenstadt Jewish community grew into an independent community alongside the Christian double community Illereichen-Altenstadt, although it had few freedoms and rights. In 1803 the construction of a new, large synagogue on Hauptstrasse was completed.

Around this time, the rule of Illereichen was in the possession of the Westphalian Counts of Limburg-Styrum , who ruled for almost a century from 1677. In 1772 the imperial count and later Prince Karl von Palm acquired the rule for 450,000 guilders . Around 1788 he sold the property for 750,000 guilders to Prince Johann Nepomuk Josef von Schwarzenberg , from whom it passed to his son Josef in 1789. During his reign, Illereichen came under the sovereignty of Bavaria in 1800 .

19th and 20th centuries

In 1833, shortly before his death, Prince Josef von Schwarzenberg sold Illereichen to the Bavarian State Minister Maximilian Graf von Montgelas , who in 1834 left jurisdiction and basic divisions to the King of Bavaria.

In 1834 the Jewish population of Altenstadt peaked at 403, while only about 100 Christian residents lived there. The sharp decline in the Jewish population in the following decades is mainly due to the fact that, due to the more liberal legal situation, Jews were allowed to settle again in the surrounding cities and also to emigrate. In 1933, at the time Hitler came to power, around 50 Jews were still living in Altenstadt, which now had just under 1,100 inhabitants. In the course of the increasingly severe Nazi persecution , at the end of 1939 the remaining 24 Jewish residents of Altenstadt were forced to sell their property and move into a Jewish house. In the spring and summer of 1942, all Altenstadt Jews were deported for extermination. None of them returned. The synagogue of the Jewish community of Altenstadt, which was only slightly damaged in the nationwide November pogroms of 1938 , was demolished in 1955. A memorial plaque on the Memminger Strasse 47 office building commemorates this event.

On April 15, 1903, the former municipality of Illereichen was renamed Illereichen-Altenstadt . Another renaming, now in the current name Altenstadt , took place on July 1, 1972.

Incorporations

On July 1, 1972, the previously independent communities Dattenhausen and Herrenstetten were incorporated. Untereichen was added on July 1, 1976. Bergenstetten and Filzingen followed on May 1, 1978. A small part of Altenstadt with around 6 inhabitants was added to neighboring Oberroth on January 1, 1979 .

Population development

Between 1988 and 2018 the market grew from 4,204 to 5,109 by 905 inhabitants or 21.5%.
