Old town (place name)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Altstadt is a place name. It often refers, sometimes only colloquially, to a historic city center after the city has expanded to include suburbs and, through incorporation, other communities. The place name can also simply mean “Old City”. It is made up of the basic word "-stadt", which from the 12th century stood for a mostly fortified settlement with market rights and self-administration, and the defining word "old". Name variants are u. a. Altenstadt and Altstätten .
