The Armed Forces of Azerbaijan ( Azerbaijani Azərbaycan Silahlı Qüvvələri ) are the military of Azerbaijan , they came into being after independence from the Soviet Union in 1991 . Most of the equipment of the Azerbaijani SSR passed into their possession.

There is general conscription from the age of 18. All male citizens of the Republic of Azerbaijan up to the age of 35 are called up. The service period is 1.5 years for soldiers without a university degree and 1 year for university graduates.

Militarily, the country works closely with Ukraine , Pakistan , the USA and, above all, Turkey . So elite units of the army are trained by Turkish officers.

Azerbaijan, along with Turkey , Kyrgyzstan and Mongolia, has been a member of the Eurasia special unit with military status, or TAKM for short, since 2013.

The armed forces have so far been deployed in the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict . Azerbaijan is a member of the GUAM Alliance and the Partnership for Peace of NATO .

As part of this partnership, Azerbaijan also participates in ISAF operations . 94 soldiers are involved in the ISAF mission in Afghanistan (March 2011). Azerbaijan has already participated in operations in Iraq and Kosovo in the past.

According to DefenseNews.com , defense spending rose from $ 146 million in 2004 to $ 1.1 billion in 2007. The budget rose dramatically to 4.46 in 2011 due to the huge revenues from oil and gas exports Billion US dollars, so Azerbaijan has the second highest arms spending within the CIS after Russia , although it is one of the smaller former Soviet republics. It was in March 2007 from Ukraine and Belarus several air superiority fighter type MiG-29 purchased for the Air Force. The Air Force also ordered 26 units of the Chengdu Fierce Dragon from the Pakistani Aviation Integrated Company (PAIC). Most of the equipment is of Russian or Soviet origin, e.g. B. the Mil Mi-24 , the Ilyushin Il-76 or the Suchoi Su-24 . The army owns 136 T-72 and 123 T-55 tanks and 200 armored personnel carriers from the BMP series . High officers in the armed forces are not infrequently former Spetsnaz .
