Bedford County is a county in the state of Pennsylvania in the United States . At the 2000 census , the county had 49,984 people and a population density of 19 people per square kilometer. The county seat is Bedford .
history
The county was established on March 9, 1771. The name comes from Fort Bedford or the city of Bedford , which were named after John Russell, 4th Duke of Bedford . The area of the county was already settled before the arrival of European settlers. This is evidenced by excavations at the Bedford Village Archeological Site .
Two places in the county have National Historic Landmark status , the Bedford Springs Hotel Historic District and the Espy House . 29 buildings and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) (as of July 20, 2018).

The county covers an area of 2,635 square kilometers, of which 7 square kilometers are water. Bedford County is bordered clockwise: Blair County , Huntingdon County , Fulton County , the state of Maryland , Somerset County, and Cambria County .
