history

The mention of the place Berquide iuxta Calve in the year 1238 is interpreted today as the first written mention of Berkau.

The former parish village Berkau originally belonged to the district of Stendal and was assigned to the district of Kalbe (Milde) on July 25, 1952 . With the dissolution of the district on January 1, 1988 Berkau came to the Gardelegen district . After its dissolution on July 1, 1994, Berkau finally came to the district of Stendal as before.

Until December 31, 2009 Berkau was an independent municipality with the associated district of Wartenberg and belonged to the now dissolved administrative community Bismark / Kläden .

The municipality council of Berkau decided on June 15, 2009 to approve an area change agreement, which dissolved their municipality and became part of a new unified municipality called the city of Bismark (Altmark) . This contract was approved by the county as the lower local supervisory authority and came into effect on January 1, 2010.

A local council with five members including the local mayor is formed in the municipality that has been incorporated and is now Berkau.
