Riedern is a common quarter in the VI Bümpliz-Oberbottigen district in the city ​​of Bern . The north belongs to the statistical district 32 Bethlehem , the south to the district 30 Oberbottigen of the city of Bern. It borders on the common Bethlehem quarters Eymatt , Eichholz and Gäbelbach as well as the common Bümplizer quarters Niederbottigen and Oberbottigen-Riedbach . In the northwest is the Bern city limits ( Frauenkappelen or the Aare and Wohlen near Bern on the other bank).

In 2019 the resident population was 325, of which 283 are Swiss and 42 are foreigners.

history

Riedern has a high proportion of fields and forests. The hamlet of the same name has a rural character and is dominated by homesteads. It was included in the federal inventory of places worth protecting in Switzerland of national importance .

A residential area in Riedernrain is built in terraces on the north bank of the Gäbelbach. The condominiums were built in four stages between 1978 and 1988 and now comprise 122 houses and eight studios. A piazza runs right through the settlement, serves as a meeting area and separates the upper from the lower part. An expansion of the urban region of Bern to Frauenkappelen and Wohlen was considered in the regional conference Bern-Mittelland in 2014, then Riedern would no longer be the city limits.

Industry and commerce

Bern Radio maintained the only coastal radio station in the world in a landlocked country in Riedern . Maritime radio in Switzerland had existed since 1941, and since January 1, 2009 it was operated by Swisscom Broadcast AG on behalf of the Swiss Confederation . Operations ceased in March 2016.
