The Diocese of Greenland is an Evangelical Lutheran church under the direction of Bishop Sofie Petersen . It is partially autonomous from the Danish People's Church , but is still one of its dioceses.
history
Before the Reformation there was a diocese Garðar , which was established in 1126 and dissolved in 1378. In 1996 it was rebuilt as the titular diocese of Gardar .
From 1721 Greenland was evangelical-Lutheran missionary by Hans Egede . In 1905 the Church Law of Greenland, which was drawn up mainly by Christian Wilhelm Schultz-Lorentzen, came into force, making Greenland no longer a mission area, but a provost office under the Diocese of Zealand . From 1923 to 1993 Greenland was part of the Copenhagen diocese . In 1980 the office of provincial provost was upgraded to a vice-bishop. In 1993 the independent diocese of Greenland was founded.
Independence status
The Church of Greenland, like other institutions, is co-administered by Denmark with great autonomy. The Church of Greenland is a diocese that is part of the Danish Church and is supposed to gain autonomy. It follows the example of the Faroese People's Church , which became independent in July 2007. Since June 21, 2009, the local government of Greenland has taken over the administration and financing of the diocese. But it is still part of the Danish People's Church .
Church structure
Like other Evangelical Lutheran episcopal churches, it recognizes the offices of bishop, pastor and deacon. Sacraments are baptism and the Lord's Supper . There are liturgies for confirmation , marriage , consecration , confession and burial . The basis of faith is the creed and the Confessio Augustana .
It is in communion with the Lutheran Churches of Scandinavia and the Baltic States and the Anglican Church in Great Britain.
The clergy work with the church councils, but are ordained and supervised by the bishop. There are 17 parishes in Greenland. There are three deaneries as a level between the parishes and the diocese. The heads of the three provosts and the senior pastor of the cathedral bear the title provost .
Administrative division
There are three provosts ( Provsteqarfiit ), which are divided into 18 Præstegæld ( Palaseqarfiit ), 17 of which are in Greenland and one is responsible for the Greenlanders in Denmark.
