Chanson Festival Berlin
The Berlin Chanson Festival has been held annually since 1996. It is considered the largest music festival for chansons in German-speaking countries.
History and profile
The Chanson Festival was created in 1996 in cooperation with several chanson performers from the New Berlin Chanson scene . One of the founding members was the singer and presenter Gunnar König , accompanied by the Berlin chanson duo Schall und Hauch and the chansonnier Boris Steinberg . The criterion in the selection of artists is to expand the term “chanson” without getting too close to the comedy or cabaret area. Excerpts from the program were broadcast by Deutschlandfunk in its “Liederladen” program.
The Chanson Festival was funded by the Berlin Senate until 2013 . This year the funding was canceled despite the protests of many artists who sent an open letter to the Berlin State Secretary for Culture André Schmitz . The Chanson Festival took place from October 24th to 26th, although its implementation was initially doubtful.
The twentieth and, for the time being, last Chanson Festival Berlin took place in October 2015.
