The city was liberated by units of the Soviet 52nd Army on December 14, 1943. End of January to mid-February 1944 it came west of the city in the space Korsun for boiler Battle of Cherkassy . Of the Wehrmacht troops enclosed by the Red Army (including the SS Panzer Division "Wiking" ), 21,000 men (approx. 37.5%) were killed or taken prisoner. The remainder (approx. 35,000 men from the original 56,000) managed to break through to the west.

During the construction of the Druzhba route from 1975 to 1986, Cherkassy was the seat of the building management for the section from Kremenchuk to Bar, which was taken over by the GDR .
