The tournament was played in the preliminary round with three groups, which were divided according to regional criteria and consisted of four teams each. The respective group winners qualified for the final group, in which each team competed against each other once. The venue for all three matches in the final group was the Estadio Olímpico Ciudad de los Deportes in Mexico City .
Preliminary round
The preliminary round matches were played between February 17 and March 27, 1952.
Nine of these players had already successfully contested last year's final for Atlante. The only newcomers were the otherwise “eternal substitute goalkeeper” José “Chato” Sierra and Lucio Gómez, who was newly signed before the season and also scored a goal in this game, on the left winger. There had also been a change in the coaching position. While the previous year's title was achieved under the Mexican coach Octavio Vial , this time the Spaniard Gregorio Blasco led the team to success.
