Copa México 1971/72

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Copa MX 1971/72 was the 30th edition of the football - cup competition since the introduction of professional football in Mexico . The 18 teams that were represented in the top division in the 1971/72 season were eligible to participate . The games were played in August and September 1972 after the round of the league table. The cup winners were the Club León team for the fifth (and so far last) time .

mode

The tournament was played in the preliminary round with three groups, each consisting of six teams that competed against each other once. The three group winners qualified for the final round, which was also played in group matches. The special thing about this tournament was that every game had to find a winner, as is characteristic of a knockout procedure. If there was no winner after normal playing time, the game went into extra time or afterwards to penalties . Had this not been in place, the CD Zacatepec would have won the cup after winning the final group after a 1-0 win against Club León and a 1-1 draw against Puebla FC . However, because the encounter with Puebla FC demanded a winner, a penalty shoot-out was necessary in the end, in which the Camoteros prevailed and helped Club León to the title.

Preliminary round

The preliminary round matches were played between August 5 and September 3, 1972.

After Club León lost their second game at CD Zacatepec, they could no longer win the cup on their own and had to rely on a narrow victory for Puebla FC (with a correspondingly high victory for the Camoteros, on the other hand, Puebla FC itself would have been cup winners ). With the victory of Puebla FC on penalties, Club León became cup winners as a spectator, so to speak "without a fight".

The squad of the cup winners Club León included the following players:

Goal: Darío Miranda - Defense: Rafael Albrecht , Guillermo "Puskas" García , Carlos Gómez , Héctor Santoyo - Midfield: Mario Ayala , Salvador Carrillo , Rafael "Chepe" Chávez , Mario Cuevas , Jorge "Tarzán" Davino , Salvador "Chavicos" Enríquez , Luis "Chino" Estrada , Alejandro Hernández - Attack: Roberto Salomone , José "Cocodrilo" Valdés , Juan José "Coco" Valiente ; Trainer: Antonio "Cinco Copas" Carbajal .
