Copa México 1996/97

The Copa MX 1996/97 was the 41st edition of the football - cup competition since the introduction of professional football in Mexico . A total of 33 teams took part. These consisted of the 18 teams that were represented in the top division in the 1996/97 season , as well as 15 teams from the second-rate Primera División 'A' . One of these second division teams was the Gallos Blancos de Hermosillo team, which dropped out at the end of the previous 1995/96 season . The cup winner was the CD Cruz Azul team for the second time .

mode

The preliminary round was held in group encounters. There were four groups, one of nine and the other three of eight teams each. When dividing the groups, regional aspects of the clubs were taken into account. The teams within the same group met each other only once, whereby the lower-class team basically had home rights. Only in the group 2 game between the Gallos Blancos de Hermosillo and the UAG Tecos was the home right ultimately exchanged. Every group game also had to have a winner, who was determined on penalties in the event of a draw after regular time . The four group winners qualified for the semi-finals, which, like the final, were decided in only one match in a knockout process.

Preliminary round

The preliminary round matches were played between June 28 and July 28, 1996. The goal difference given in the tables does not take into account the penalty shoot-out used to determine a winner.

The final was held on August 3, 1996 in the Estadio 10 de diciembre of the Ciudad Cooperativa Cruz Azul . The gates to the 2: 0 win the Cementeros scored Carlos Hermosillo (15th minute) and Luis Carlos de Oliveira (52).
