Copa México 1954/55

The Copa MX 1954/55 was the 13th edition of the football - cup competition since the introduction of professional football in Mexico . As in the previous year , the two arch-rivals of Mexican football faced each other in the final . The Club America was able to defend his title and the Club Deportivo Guadalajara already succumbed to the fourth time in a Mexican Cup final and therefore remained at the national level continue without a title.

The cup tournament was held following the league round of the 1954/55 season. The twelve teams that were represented in the top division in the same season were eligible to participate . Therefore, there were only four encounters in the round of 16 and four teams advanced by bye.

The encounters were played in the knockout system . The eighth and quarter-finals were played in two-legged matches with one home right each for the two opponents, while the semi-finals and final were decided in just one match. The final venue was the Estadio Olímpico Ciudad de los Deportes in Mexico City .

The matches of the round of 16 took place between February 5 and February 13, 1955.

Notes: 1 After Necaxa and Toluca had both won their away game 3-0, a third game was set to determine the winner, which was played on February 15, 1955 in Toluca and ended goalless after extra time . In the subsequent penalty shootout , Necaxa was able to prevail 6: 3.

The other four first division clubs ( Club América , León FC , CD Oro and CD Zacatepec ) advanced by bye.

Quarter finals

The quarter-finals were played between February 20 and June 27, 1955. The teams that had to qualify in a sporting way and those who came to the quarter-finals by bye stayed among themselves.

The semi-finals were played on March 3, 1955 in only one encounter. The venues were the Parque Felipe Martínez Sandoval in Guadalajara and the Estadio Olímpico Ciudad de los Deportes in Mexico City .

The final was held on March 6, 1955. The shooter of the “golden gate” for America was Manuel Cañibe .
