The encounters were played in the knockout system . All encounters were decided in just one game. However, there was one round more than was actually necessary because in the first round only four matches took place, through which the four winners qualified for the next round, which the other six teams reached by bye . In the next round five matches took place, the winners of which qualified for the quarter-finals as well as the other three teams who advanced by bye. Here, the were Puebla FC and León FC (and each were eliminated in the second round), the only two teams that came in two rounds used.
Preliminary round
The four games of the first round were played on July 9, 1950. The encounters took place according to regional criteria (in three cases there was a city derby), but did not take into account the sporting performance of the previous round of points. For while, for example, from Guadalajara of CD Guadalajara finished the season in twelfth place and progressed via walkover, the two had local rivals CD Oro (eleventh place) and CF Atlas (sixth place) on sporting merit for the second round qualify. Likewise came to Mexico City the Club América (eighth place) by walkover on, while the runner- CF Atlante to city derby against Marte FC had to play (with the ninth of the worst capital club).
