Copa México 1961/62

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Copa MX 1961/62 was the 20th edition of the football - cup competition since the introduction of professional football in Mexico . The 14 teams that were represented in the top division in the 1961/62 season were eligible to participate . The CF Atlas team won the cup for the third time (after 1946 and 1950) . Because city rivals Chivas won the championship title for the fourth time in a row in the same season, the two important national football titles went to the city of Guadalajara for the first time in the history of Mexican club football in the same season . This resulted in a Clásico Tapatío in the subsequent Supercup game , which Atlas also won.

mode

The tournament was played in the preliminary round with four groups. Two of these consisted of four teams each, the other two of three teams each. The respective group winners qualified for the semi-finals in the knockout system . This was played back and forth with one home right each for the two opponents, while originally only one match was planned for the final held at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario in Mexico City . Because in this, however, no winner could be determined, a replay was necessary, which also took place in the Estadio Olímpico Universitario.

Preliminary round

The preliminary round matches were played between March 4 and April 4, 1962. The following designation of the groups (with 1, 2, 3 and 4) is only for the sake of clarity, but otherwise purely arbitrary, as the exact designation of the groups has not been handed down. The sorting takes into account, however, that the qualified group winners from the respective neighboring groups (1 and 2 on the one hand and 3 and 4 on the other hand) had to compete against each other in the semifinals.

The same players also competed in the Supercup, where they are referred to by RSSSF as Newton Goncalves and Custodio Alves Guimaraes. Because of these differences, only the smallest common part of the name was given here. Further details about the players could not be found.
