The tournament was played in the preliminary round with four groups. Two of these consisted of four teams each, the other two of three teams each. The respective group winners qualified for the semi-finals in the knockout system . This was played back and forth with one home right each for the two opponents, while originally only one match was planned for the final held at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario in Mexico City . Because in this, however, no winner could be determined, a replay was necessary, which also took place in the Estadio Olímpico Universitario.
Preliminary round
The preliminary round matches were played between March 4 and April 4, 1962. The following designation of the groups (with 1, 2, 3 and 4) is only for the sake of clarity, but otherwise purely arbitrary, as the exact designation of the groups has not been handed down. The sorting takes into account, however, that the qualified group winners from the respective neighboring groups (1 and 2 on the one hand and 3 and 4 on the other hand) had to compete against each other in the semifinals.
1 It is unclear why América won the group against Morelia on tied points and goals. The »direct comparison« may have been used to determine the group winner.
↑ Las cuatro copas del Atlas (Spanish; article of November 5, 2013). The last two player names, which are referred to in the cited source as Custodio Alves and Newton Guimarães, are unclear. The same players also competed in the Supercup, where they are referred to by RSSSF as Newton Goncalves and Custodio Alves Guimaraes. Because of these differences, only the smallest common part of the name was given here. Further details about the players could not be found.
