The Copa MX 1991/92 was the 38th edition of the football - cup competition since the introduction of professional football in Mexico . The 20 teams that were represented in the top division in the 1991/92 season were eligible to participate . Cup winners were for the first and so far only time the team of CF Monterrey . Also for the only time so far, there was a purely northern Mexican duel between the Rayados and the Cobras from the border town of Ciudad Juárez in the final of the cup competition .
The preliminary round was held in group encounters. There were five groups, each consisting of four teams. The teams within the same group met twice each. The five group winners as well as the three runners-up in the group (each with eight points) qualified for the quarter-finals, which, like the semi-finals and the final, were decided in a knockout process with one match each.

The preliminary round matches were played between August 9 and 29, 1991.
The semifinals took place on September 4, 1991. The encounter between Monterrey and Cruz Azul took place at the Estadio Cuauhtémoc in Puebla , while the Cobras enjoyed home rights again.
The final was held on September 8, 1991 at the Estadio Tecnológico in Monterrey . Despite the Cobras' early opening goal by Honduran striker Eduardo Bennett in the first minute, CF Monterrey went into the break with a 2-1 lead and had a 4-1 lead after 70 minutes for a preliminary decision Benefit provided. Germán Martellotto and Guillermo Vázquez were the hosts' two-time goalscorers. The 4: 2 by Víctor Cossio ten minutes before the final whistle was only cosmetic results.
