With the following team, Deportivo Toluca won the cup competition of the season 1988/89 at their home country Estadio Nemesio Díez :
Juan "Venado" Gutiérrez - Mauricio Gómez Tejeda, Octavio "Picas" Becerril , Antonio Alcántara Herrera, Sergio Lagunas Gómez - Pedro Munguía , Alejandro Solano, Jesús Mendizábal - Jorge Rodríguez Esquivel , Roberto Masciarelli , Washington Olivera ; Coach: Héctor Sanabria .
Match report
After the 1-1 draw in the first leg, the Diablos Rojos of Toluca did everything in their power to score an early goal in the second leg on their own territory and began with an assault. But their attacking efforts were not crowned with success and in one of the few advances by the Leones Negros from Guadalajara , their Guatemalan striker Byron Pérez scored the opening goal for the guests in the 48th minute. In an effort to save the narrow lead over time, the Leones Negros did not shy away from unfair means and delayed the game as best they could. Therefore, referee Arturo Brizio Carter ordered five minutes of stoppage time. In the third minute of stoppage time, Washington Olivera managed to equalize late, so the game went into overtime . In the fourth minute of extra time, Toluca's homegrown Jorge Rodríguez Esquivel scored the opening goal to make it 2-1, which ultimately made the Diablos Rojos cup winners. The extra time was not played for the intended duration of (at least) 30 minutes, but was already over after a good 20 minutes. The reason for abandoning the game in the 111th minute was that the Leones Negros had to accept five dismissals due to their unfair style of play and the game was over after only six of their players were on the field.
