The Copa MX 1973/74 was the 31st edition of the football - cup competition since the introduction of professional football in Mexico . The 18 teams that were represented in the top division in the 1973/74 season were eligible to participate . The cup winners were the Club América team for the sixth time (fifth under professional conditions) , but they have since been waiting in vain for another cup triumph.

The tournament was played in the preliminary round with three groups, each consisting of six teams that competed against each other once. The three group winners as well as the group runner-up with the highest points (in this case the CD Cruz Azul with seven points) qualified for the semi-finals in the knockout system .
