Copa México 1941/42

The Copa México 1941/42 was the last Cup tournament of the Copa México before the introduction of professional football in Mexico . Cup winners were for the first time ever in the competition held since 1907/08 (at that time still under the name "Copa Tower") the team of the CF Atlante , which clearly prevailed 5-0 in the decisive final against their old rival Necaxa .

The cup tournament was played following the league round of the 1941/42 season and was contested by the eight teams that were represented in the top division at the time. Six of them were from Mexico City . The only participating club outside the capital was Moctezuma from the city of Orizaba in eastern Mexico . In addition, the Selección Jalisco , a selection team from the city of Guadalajara in western Mexico, which was usually formed from the best players from their top teams Club Atlas , Club Deportivo , Club Nacional and Club Oro , took part.

The last cup tournament of the amateur era before the introduction of professional football in Mexico in 1943 was played in a knockout process , whereby the team that had lost its second game was always eliminated. The tournament began on May 31, 1942 with the game between the newly crowned champions España and the Unión Deportiva Moctezuma, which finished third in the championship with only one point behind the champions and runners-up, and ended on September 20, 1942 with the decisive final game between old rivals Atlante and Necaxa.

The finals were played in Parque Asturias in Mexico City. In the event of a victory for the still undefeated Necaxa team, this would have meant the Necaxistas winning the cup , as this would have been Atlante's second defeat after the defeat in the third round, which would have eliminated them.
