Şabran (Rayon)
Şabran (also Shabran ) is a rayon in northern Azerbaijan on the Caspian Sea . The administrative center of the district is the city of the same name Şabran . Until 2010, the rayon and city were named Dəvəçi.
geography
The rayon has an area of 1088 km². The area on the coast of the Caspian Sea and at the foot of the Greater Caucasus consists largely of a semi-desert. There are some mud volcanoes and mineral water springs.
population
The district had 51,200 inhabitants in 2009.
Economy and Transport
Carpets are made in the region. The carpets from the village of Pirəbədil are known beyond the region. In addition, grain, wine and vegetables are grown and cattle is raised. In the village of Qalaaltı there is a sanatorium that offers cures with the local sulphurous mineral water and mud.
The main road from Baku to Dagestan on the coast runs through the rayon . Furthermore, the road to the capital of the neighboring district, Quba , runs through the rayon.
Attractions
The ruined city of the same name, Şabran, is located near the village of Şahnəzərli, about 15 km northwest of the center of the rayon . The city, founded in the 5th century on the Silk Road , was destroyed in the 18th century. In a museum in the city of Şabran (formerly Dəvəçi, renamed after the medieval city in 2010) finds from the old city are on display.
The fortress of Çıraqqala is located near the coast at an altitude of 1200 m. The first fortress was built here by the Sassanids in the 5th century . In the 18th century the castle was an outpost of the Quba Khanate .
