The German preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 1989 took place under the title Ein Lied für Lausanne . Hape Kerkeling led the show for the first time , making him known to a larger audience.

The Bayerische Rundfunk changing the mode of the preliminary decision. For the first time, the German contribution was selected by TED. In addition, only the ten most successful German music producers from October 1, 1987 to October 1, 1988 were entitled to submit titles for the preliminary decision. The TED mode was controversial because the wrong phone number was displayed in two runs for Caren Faust's contribution.
