The German preliminary decision for the Eurovision Song Contest 1997 took place in the Music and Congress Hall in Lübeck and was titled The countdown is on. Jens Riewa moderated the three quarters of an hour program. It was the second preliminary decision since it was reintroduced a year earlier, and the audience decided the winner by phone. After the departure of the German contribution in 1996, Germany was guaranteed a starting place at the ESC 1997 in Dublin.
Nine performers took part in the preliminary round. According to the Eurovision regulations, all contributions had to be sung in the national language in 1997, so all titles were in German. With 40.2 percent of the vote and a large margin, Bianca Shomburg won with her ballad Zeit . Leon , who won the preliminary round last year, came second with a shine (my little flashlight) . Michelle , who represented Germany at the ESC 2001, took part in the preliminary round for the first time. She reached third place with In the Eye of the Hurricane . Shomburg was 18th out of 25 participants in Dublin.
