Dionysus ( Greek Διόνυσος [ ðiˈɔnisɔs ] ( m. Sg. )) Is a Greek community on the northern edge of the Athens metropolitan area. It was created on January 1, 2011 through the merger of seven municipalities. The largest district and the seat of the municipal administration is Agios Stefanos , which has around 10,000 inhabitants .

geography

Geographical location

Dionysus is located about 20 kilometers north of central Athens. The west of the municipality lies on the saddle between the eastern foothills of the Parnitha and the Pendeli , whose ridge marks the southern border with the municipality of Pendeli . The Kifisos rises near Kryoneri on the other side of the western municipality boundary to Acharnes and drains south through the neighboring municipality of Kifisia over the Athens plain to the Saronic Gulf . The east of the municipality is determined by the low mountain range, which finds its highest elevations in the Dinoysovouni ( 651  m ) and in the Skarpa ( 573  m ) and in ancient times was assigned to the Diakria (Διακρία) landscape in northeast Attica. The marble quarries of Dionysus are located on the eastern slope of the Dionysovouni near Rapendosa . At the northern foot of the Pendeli massif, the villages of Drosia and Dionysos extend to the east, and a pass road leads further through the mountains to Nea Makri in the neighboring municipality of Marathon to the east . Beyond the northern border at Pefkofyto, the terrain slopes down to the north to the Charadros valley, which is dammed up here to form the marathon lake . The northern neighboring municipality is Oropos .

Community structure

The municipality is divided into municipal districts, which are important for the allocation of seats in local elections, and in urban districts, which elect their own local councils. Both correspond to the municipalities as they existed until 2010. The population figures come from the results of the 2011 census.

history

At the end of the 19th century, east of Dionysus near the village of Rapendosa, the remains of the city center of the ancient demos Ikaria or Ikarion, whose origins go back to archaic times and which was a center of Dionysus worship in Attica, were excavated. Here, according to Greek mythology, Ikarios received the god Dionysus and learned the art of viticulture from him. The finds are today, including an archaic statue of the god, in the National Archaeological Museum of Athens and document the Dionysus cult in Icarion. The name has been preserved in modern times through a Byzantine church, which was apparently dedicated to Saint Dionysius .

The area of Dionysus was relatively sparsely populated in the early days of modern Greece. When the municipality of Marathon was established, the settlements Spatatziki (since 1927 Pefkofyto ), Bogiati (since 1954 Anixi ) Stamata, Dionysos and Rapendosa were recorded as districts. Dionysus has grown into a larger settlement of miners since the marble was extracted in the quarries in the late century.

Due to the massive settlement of refugees as a result of the population exchange between Greece and Turkey from 1926, the population increased rapidly. Drosia was originally a settlement of refugees from the Black Sea region under the name Rossochori ('Russian village') and was only renamed Drosia ('Tau') in 1947. Rodopoli ('City of Roses', from 1981) emerged on the area of an abandoned settlement Bala (Greek Μπάλα, from Turkish pala 'machete'), Kryoneri (renamed 1954) also in the area of Bafi. Mainly 70 families from the area around Istanbul, also from Agios Stefanos on the Marmara Sea , settled in the newly built Neo Bogiati. The first church in this settlement was dedicated to Saint Stephen, from which the name of the settlement, confirmed in 1928, arose.

Culture and sights

The city commemorates the ancient Dionysia with an annual cultural and theater festival of the same name.

The remains of the excavations of ancient Heraklion are freely accessible.

In Dionysus there is a sculpture garden in a park.

Above Rapendosa is the German military cemetery Dionyssos-Rapendoza where the remains of almost 10,000 Wehrmacht members from the time of World War II are buried.

economy

Viticulture still plays a role in Dionysus: in 1993, the Northern slopes of Pendeli g. G. A. protected. In addition to Chardonnay , certain approved autochthonous grape varieties of Attica are grown.

Between Kryoneri and Agios Stefanos there is an extensive industrial and commercial area on both sides of the motorway. In addition to a large transformer station for the Greek electricity company, there are also factories of the Dortmund-based WILO group, the Greek meat processor NIKAS and the headquarters of Würth Hellas.

Infrastructure

Due to its location between Parnitha and Pendeli on the most important connection from Athens to the north, Dionysus is well connected in terms of traffic: the Greek A1 runs directly through the municipality and has an exit in Agios Stefanos. The national road 83 leads south from Kifisia over the dam of the Marathon lake on to Marathon and on the Attic east coast. The Piraeus – Thessaloniki railway also runs through Dionysus. The station building from 1904 has been preserved (at that time the station was called Bogiati ). Today Agios Stefanos is connected to Athens by the S-Bahn . A railway line from Kifisia to Dionysus to transport the marble existed from 1885 to 1938, the ruins of the train station in Dionysus are now used for theater performances and concerts. Otherwise, bus routes connect the community with the northern parts of Athens by local transport. The Athens International Airport and the ports of Piraeus and Rafina are easily accessible.

In the north of Agios Stefanos is the transmission mast of the ERA-1 transmitter, one of the tallest structures in Greece.
