action

Friends who live in Maine , Beaver, Henry, Jonesy and Pete help the apparently mentally retarded young Duddits as children. Since then they have had supernatural abilities: They can sense and influence the thoughts and memories of others.

After 20 years, the men are attacked by mysterious beings in a remote log cabin , where they want to go on vacation together like every year. Beaver and Pete are killed by lamprey- like monsters, while Jonesy is "taken over" by an alien who is inhaled by Jonesy as a red cloud of particles. A kind of fungus spreads in the hut and threatens to spread as a pathogen all over the world. When Henry later arrives at the hut, he finds the dead beaver and sees the extent of the fungus spreading. He also discovers small alien eggs and eggs that have already hatched. The worm-like creatures try to nestle in Henry's body. He can save himself by lighting everything and burning the hut, thus preventing the spread of fungus.

The Blue Boys , a special unit of the US military that specializes in the hunt for aliens, arrives. After 25 years of hunting aliens, the commander of the Blue Boys , Colonel Abraham Curtis, no longer has any moral scruples and has declared the entire area a restricted military area. He wants to wipe out all life there. It also succeeds with several helicopters the UFO to discover the nature and destroy. A Blue Boys officer , Lieutenant Owen Underhill, reports the planned massacre of Colonel Curtis to a general friend of his. Alerted by this, the military comes to save the population from the Blue Boys .

Henry can escape the aliens and the military. He visits Duddits, who is now sick with leukemia . Together with the renegade officer Lieutenant Underhill, they pursue Jonesy, who, guided by one of the alien beings, wants to contaminate the Boston water reservoir with the alien fungus.

Through memories of their childhood, Henry notices that there was a reason from the beginning why they received these supernatural powers from Duddits and Duddits spoke earlier about saving the world. Now the time has come when that should happen.

There is a showdown at the reservoir. Lieutenant Underhill and the Blue Boys commander , Colonel Curtis, kill each other. The extraterrestrial, who is always called Mr. Gray by Duddits , in Jonesy's body is exposed by Duddits. Then he slips out of Jonesy's body again, and Duddits transforms into an alien, apparently a rival race. Both fight each other and die in the process.

Henry and Jonesy are the only surviving protagonists. During the fight, another worm hatched from an egg, apparently unnoticed, and tried to get into the water reservoir. At the last moment, however, Jonesy crushes him.

Reviews

Moviemaze wrote that the film is an exciting science fiction film that knows how to entertain the audience with numerous well-humored actors and a somewhat mysterious Morgan Freeman.

James Berardinelli wrote on ReelViews that the film was not worth the time, money or effort (“ Dreamcatcher isn't worth the time, money, or effort”). Part of the problem is the editing, which makes the story confusing; the right tone, style and tempo would be missing. The originality is also missing.

The lexicon of international films wrote: "The dramatic and staging convincing film adaptation of a story by Stephen King, which cleverly balances the genre-typical frightening, eerie disgusting and parodic elements."

Awards

The film was nominated for a Teen Choice Award .

Trivia

  • The character of Colonel Abraham Curtis was originally called Abraham Kurtz in Stephen King's novel Duddits .
  • The final fight scene, in which Duddits turns out to be an alien, does not come from the novel; Stephen King's version has been modified. As an extra, the purchase DVD also contains the original ending, also filmed but not used: Duddits defeats the extraterrestrial known as Mr. Gray with the help of supernatural powers without transforming himself. Finally, some time later, Henry and Jonesy sing in front of Duddit's grave - Duddit has since succumbed to his previously diagnosed cancer.
