EHF Champions League 1996/97

In the 1996/97 EHF Champions League , 36 handball club teams took part, which had qualified for the competition in their home leagues in the previous season. It was the 37th edition of the EHF Champions League or the European Cup of National Champions. The defending champion was FC Barcelona . The cup games began on August 24, 1996, with the second final on April 19, 1997. In the final, FC Barcelona was able to prevail against Badel 1862 Zagreb and thus defend its title from the previous year.

mode

This season, a total of 16 teams played in four groups for the first time in the group stage. The round of 16 was canceled and after an elimination round, the winners from the round of 16, both played in a knockout system with a return leg, moved into the group stage. There played in four groups with four teams each, in each group each against each other a return match. The two best in the group each reached the newly introduced quarter-finals. From this point onwards, the knockout system with a two-legged match went through a semi-final to the final. The winner of the final was the EHF Champions League winner of the 1996/97 season.

final

The first leg in Barcelona took place on April 12, 1997 and the second leg in Zagreb on April 19, 1997. FC Barcelona managed to defend their title for the first time since the competition was called EHF Champions League. Badel 1962 Zagreb was the last team that succeeded when the competition was still called the European Cup.
