Ten speed skating competitions were held at the XVII Winter Olympics in Lillehammer in 1994 . The venue was the Hamar Olympic Hall in Hamar , which opened in 1992 and is one of the fastest lanes in the world. Although the former athletes started for their respective new national associations for the first time after the collapse of the Soviet Union , fewer runners and fewer nations were registered than two years earlier in Albertville .

The German team, used to success, had to cope with a certain disappointment. For the first time, the effects of the changed social conditions for the mostly East German athletes were felt. Nonetheless, the women won six medals. Gunda Niemann's fall over 3000 meters meant a serious setback . The ambitious Erfurt, who was considered the winner of both long distances and a fixed medal bank over 1500 meters from the start, ran too briskly on the fast ice and got stuck on a frozen track mark right at the start of her parade route. Despite the fall, he crossed the finish line, securing the team a place on the grid and still winning silver and bronze. The Norwegian Johann Olav Koss won three courses in front of his home crowd with world records and rose to become a folk hero.
