European Cup Winners' Cup 1970/71

The 1971/72 European Cup Winners 'Cup was the 12th draw of the European Cup Winners' Cup. 34 club teams from 33 countries took part, including defending champions Chelsea FC, 26 national cup winners and 7 defeated cup finalists (Liverpool FC, Komlói Bányász, Sparta Rotterdam, Lyn Oslo, Glasgow Rangers, Škoda Pilsen and Zagłębie Sosnowiec).

From Germany there were DFB Cup winners FC Bayern Munich , from the GDR FDGB Cup winners BFC Dynamo , from Austria ÖFB Cup winners FK Austria Wien and from Switzerland Servette Geneva .

The top scorer was Peter Osgood from Chelsea FC with 8 goals .

mode

As usual, the participants played the winner in pure cup mode with home and return matches. If there was a tie after both games, the number of goals scored away decided ( away goal rule ). If their number was also the same, extra time took place in the second leg, in which the away goals rule also applied. If there was still a tie at the end of extra time, a penalty shoot- out was carried out. The final was decided in a game on a neutral court. In the event of a tie after extra time, the winner would have been determined for the first time in a penalty shoot-out in the final.

Preliminary round

The first leg took place on 18./28. August, the second leg on August 28/1. September 1971.

1The referee mistakenly allowed a penalty shoot-out after extra time, although Glasgow would have qualified for the quarter-finals based on the away goals rule . Sporting won the penalty shootout 3-0 but the Rangers protested at UEFA . This was granted and Glasgow was allowed to rise.
