1992 to 1999: early years
Another second team was brought into being by the later Mainz manager Christian Heidel and started under the name 1. FSV Mainz 05 Amateure in the 1992/93 season in the C-class, the then lowest division. After four championships in a row, she rose in 1997 to the Association League Southwest . In the first season in the Association League Southwest , the second team from 1. FSV Mainz 05 reached 3rd place and rose to the Oberliga Südwest .
1999 to 2004: First seasons in the major league
In the Oberliga Südwest, the team established itself in the upper table with coach Manfred Lorenz and reached 4th place in the first season. Behind FC 08 Homburg they were the second best climber. After the season, the former professional Uwe Stöver became coach and finished the 2000/01 season in 7th place with the team. After one season he was replaced by the former English professional Colin Bell . In the first season under him, the Mainz amateurs finished second behind Borussia Neunkirchen , in the next season he led the team to the championship and rose to the Regionalliga Süd .
2003 to 2005: Two seasons in the regional league
In the first season, the team secured 14th place in the regional league. Due to the simultaneous promotion of the first team to the first Bundesliga, all teams in the club, from the first team to the youth teams, played in the highest possible league in the 2004/05 season. During the season Colin Bell moved to Preußen Münster and his assistant coach Peter Neustädter , who was still active as a player for the second team, took over the coaching position. The Mainz reserve, together with FC Nöttingen and 1. SC Feucht , was relegated as 16th .
2005 to 2008: Another time in the league
After relegation to the Oberliga Südwest they missed the direct re-promotion behind FK Pirmasens and FC 08 Homburg as third . In the following season they reached second place behind the FSV Oggersheim and missed promotion. With 76 points they became champions in the 2007/08 season and achieved promotion to the Regionalliga West .
2008 to 2014: Playing time in the regional league
After the promotion, the team secured in the 2008/09 season with a 5th place to stay in the Regionalliga West and provided the fourth-best reserve team. In the next season, Peter Neustädter was on leave on April 26, 2010, when FSV Mainz 05 II was in 16th place in the table. Chief scout Roland Vrabec took over the team until the end of the season and led the team to relegation with 15th place.
For the new season, the Swiss Martin Schmidt took over the team, Vrabec became his assistant coach. In the 2010/11 season, the team reached 13th place, in the following season with 12th place relegation. As a result of the regional league reform, 1. FSV Mainz 05 II started in the Regionalliga Südwest in the 2012/13 season and reached 11th place in the first season.
In the following season the Mainz team achieved their best result in the regional league with third place and benefited from the fact that SC Freiburg had not applied for a license for the third league for its second team . Because the Regionalliga Südwest sent two teams into the promotion games, the Mainz team moved up and met the champions of the Regionalliga Nordost , TSG Neustrelitz , in the promotion games to the 3rd division . In the first leg in Neustrelitz, Mainz won with goals from Mounir Bouziane and Daniel Bohl . In the second leg, the goals of Devante Parker , Mounir Bouziane and Marc Wachs secured the 3-1 and promotion to the third division.
2014 to 2017: Time in the 3rd division
After Martin Schmidt had led the team into the third division, he was appointed head coach of the first team after Kasper Hjulmand was dismissed on February 17, 2015. The then coach of the U-19 team, Sandro Schwarz , took over the coaching position in the second team. He led the team with 16th place to keep the league; in the 2015/16 season they managed to stay up again. At the end of the season they were in 12th place and were thus the best second representation in the 3rd division. In the 2016/17 season, the team could not hold the class as 19th and was relegated from the league.
From 2017: Regionalliga Südwest
After relegation from the third division, Dirk Kunert took over the coaching position of Sandro Schwarz for the 2017/18 regional league season , who had been appointed coach of the first team as the successor to Martin Schmidt. Kunert was released at the beginning of April 2018 and replaced by Thomas Krücken. Bartosch Gaul has been the team's coach since the 2018/19 season .
DFB Cup history
Between 2001 and 2005, the Mainz amateurs under coach Peter Neustädter won the Southwest Cup five times in a row and each qualified for the DFB Cup competition of the following season. Because the first team of the FSV played either in the Bundesliga or in the 2nd Bundesliga , they were also qualified, whereby Mainz 05 was represented with two teams in the DFB Cup.
In the five appearances in the DFB Cup, the Mainz reserve never got past the first round. In their first and third participation, they were only beaten on penalties by the then first division club Borussia Mönchengladbach and then second division club Karlsruher SC .
