RUTH - The German World Music Prize has been awarded annually since 2002 on the Saturday of the first weekend in July during the Rudolstadt Festival . Starting in 2020, the festival's ten-person organizational team will be awarding this award, which is endowed with 5,000 euros. Until 2019, the MDR Kultur award was primarily awarded to other radio stations involved, together with the Rudolstadt Festival and the creole support group . Until 2006, Profolk , the association for folk , song and world music in Germany, was one of the promoters. The predecessor was the Folk Promotion Prize awarded from 1992 , a prize for promising young musicians. The name of the award is a play on words with root , the English word for root and roots music as a term for traditional folk and world music. The prize was endowed with a total of 11,500 euros until 2019. Deviating from the official designation of the price, the RUTH is usually used like the female first name Ruth, together with a female article.

Goal setting

Concerns the price is outstanding achievements in world music - genre to appreciate and make this music genre to get more attention, and both the domestic and international reputation of the winners and beyond to the entire German folk, song and world music scene strengthen.

Until 2012, the RUTH was awarded annually in the categories:

  • "Deutsche RUTH" - for artists with roots in German musical traditions,
  • "Globale RUTH" - for artists with roots in regional music traditions of the world,
  • "Ehren-RUTH" - for people or institutions who have made a great contribution to promoting world music.
  • "Newcomer" (until 2006)

"Ehren-RUTH" and "Newcomer" were awarded several times.

After the new jury found the categories to be too rigid, they were subjected to a “general revision” in 2013. Since this year, the prize has therefore been awarded in the following categories:

  • "RUTH" (main prize)
  • "Funding RUTH"
  • "Honor RUTH"
  • "Rudolstadt Festival RUTH"

From 2020, the RUTH will no longer be allocated according to categories.

Selection process

RUTH is a nomination price, personal applications are not possible. An advisory board nominates the potential award winners.

In the categories German RUTH and Globale RUTH, the advisory board primarily assessed the artistic activity in the previous year for its proposals to the jury . It was expressly not stipulated that "native" Germans should refer to German RUTH and immigrants to global RUTH. Nominees must be available for a live performance at the Rudolstadt Festival.

The advisory board and jury are made up of experts in the field of the sponsors (specialist journalists, publishers , organizers , record dealers, musicians ).
