The soccer state championship of Saxony 1948/49 served to determine the Saxon soccer champions and the Saxon participants in the soccer east zone championship in 1949 . In contrast to the rest of the GDR countries , no top national class was introduced in Saxony this season. Instead, the clubs played again in five regional football districts. The district champions qualified for the final round, in which the Saxon football champions were played. After the final round, the clubs SG Dresden-Friedrichstadt , SG Einheit Meerane and ZSG Industrie Leipzig tied on points, so that another final round was held with these three teams. In this the SG Dresden-Friedrichstadt prevailed and qualified for the Eastern Zone Championship in 1949, in which the Dresden team, however, was eliminated in the quarter-finals against the later Eastern Zone Master ZSG Union Halle . Meerane was also qualified as runner-up for the eastern zone championship and just failed in the semifinals 3: 4 after extra time to Fortuna Erfurt .
The three best clubs from the final round also qualified for the first-class GDR football league 1949/50, which was newly introduced for the coming season . With the introduction of the Saxony state soccer class for the coming season , which was played in two seasons, there were state classes in all five states from 1949.

While the good placement of SG Dresden-Friedrichstadt around Helmut Schön did not surprise, the poor performance of the first East Zone Champion SG Planitz with only one draw and three defeats was a big surprise. The structural change of SG Leipzig-Leutzsch was remarkable, which was transformed into ZSG Industrie Leipzig in the middle of the championship round and was thus able to draw on a larger pool of players. The newcomer Heinz Fröhlich alone scored three of the eight goals. Since three teams were tied in front, the officials in charge decided to play the Sachsenmeister among these three teams in an extra round.

The SG Dresden-Friedrichstadt and SG Meerane thus qualified for the soccer east zone championship in 1949 . The games for the Saxon championship had left an impression on the German Sports Committee , which for the first time initiated a republic-wide football league for all five countries of the SBZ / GDR for the 1949/50 season. Due to the strength of the Saxon teams, Saxony was the only state to have three representatives, and accordingly the best three Saxon teams of the 1948/49 season. With third place in the FDGB Cup , which was held for the first time , the ZSG Horch Zwickau, which has now been founded, even qualified a fourth Saxon representative for the upper house in GDR football. For the coming 1949/50 season, a national league was introduced in Saxony with the state league, which was organized in two seasons.
