Yılmaz Gökdel (born February 20, 1940 in Istanbul ; † November 4, 2019 there ) was a Turkish football player and coach. During his playing days as a football player, Gökdel Pire was called Yılmaz (Yılmaz, the flea) .

Athletic career

In the club

Yılmaz Gökdel started his career at Süleymaniyespor . The striker played there until 1957. Before the start of the 1957/58 season, he moved to Sarıyer SK . In two years for Sarıyer he was only used once.

After two years, Gökdel became a Beykozspor player . In his first season for Beykoz, the striker made 38 league games and scored six goals. In January 1964 Gökdel was signed by Galatasaray Istanbul at the request of Gündüz Kılıç . At the end of the 1963/64 season he won the Turkish Cup for the first time, and the cup was successfully defended in the following two seasons.

For the 1968/69 season Yılmaz Gökdel went to Vefa Istanbul . After a season he returned to Galatasaray for his last active season and ended his career in the summer of 1970.

In the national team

Yılmaz Gökdel played for Turkey from 1964 to 1965.

Coaching career

Gökdel made his first experiences as a coach as an assistant coach at Galatasaray. At Malatyaspor Gokdel was head coach for the first time in the 1976/77 season. This was followed by Konya İdman Yurdu and Gaziantepspor . With the second division Gaziantepspor he rose to the 1st Lig after the 1978/79 season .

1980 Yılmaz Gökdel took over a second division again with MKE Ankaragücü . In the Turkish Cup, Gökdel and his team caused the biggest surprise. As the first second division team in the history of the Turkish Cup, they were cup winners at the end of the competition. In the final they defeated Boluspor . Before that, the Ankara club beat Beşiktaş Istanbul in the quarter-finals and Fenerbahçe Istanbul in the semifinals . Due to the decision of the then President of Turkey Kenan Evren , MKE Ankaragücü was able to climb up to the first division as a cup winner and was thus the fourth promoter of the 1980/81 season. Under the direction of Gökdel, Ankaragücü made it to the finals one more time. However, the winner of the cup was Galatasaray Istanbul.

After his time in Ankara, Gökdel became a coach at Kocaelispor and Antalyaspor . In 1984 Yılmaz Gökdel coached the Turkish U21 national team for two games. After the Turkish national team lost 8-0 to England on November 14, 1984, he was promoted to coach of the national team. Under him, Turkey won against Luxembourg and drew against Albania. His last game as coach of Turkey was against Romania on April 3, 1985. His successor was the Hungarian Kálmán Mészöly .

After his time in the association, the former striker took over many teams, but without much success. His last head coach was in 1996 at Beylerbeyi SK . Gökdel died on November 4, 2019 at the age of 79.
